SKS caked and dried cosmoline or rust?

Check your gas tube and piston...make sure it's not rusted to hell too.

Yeah... I bought one that was spotless on the outside and the gas system was seized up with rust. Would not budge. That's usually where you see it the worst.

Having said that... The SKS is a minute of man rifle, generally. If you can clean the rust out, it will probably shoot fine - unless the rust has really effected the lands.

Sure hope it is grease. But it looks like rust.

^This...

Side note, if it was dried grease in the bore, it would look like the dried grease on the rest of the rifle... It looks like rust to me, but saying that I have seen rusty barrels and have them come clean.
Where did you get the rifle?

I have an SKS M model that only had 20 rounds through it and put away for over 20 years. I bought it for the price of a regular SKS in today’s market. I though the same and hoped it was old cosmoline in the barrel. Well I was wrong and the lands were barley there. And super corroded for a chrome lined barrel. Cleaned it up. Put maybe 100 rounds through it and it is just as accurate as my others. Just not a $500 dollar gun anymore even though it looks new!!
