Since the SKS is in 7.62 x 39 I figured that this could go into the Black & Green Rifles section.

Not bad. Might make a decent non restricted black (or green) rifle :)

Can't someone just make a decent copy of the regular SKS stock instead? What's with this obsession for M4 buttstocks? Yes, they're comfy but when you put one on an SKS it just looks stupid.
 
The SKS wood stocks are often too short for the average north american shooter, and the real market for gun accessories is the US where M4 carbine stocks are popular on anything, M14, Remington 870 etc. etc.

Im sure that Ive seen sythetic stocks for the SKS in a classic style but they are often in a hunting Monte Carlo style.

I think that its about time SKS shooters got some better kit. TAPCO (makers of this stock) is good for this.

Yes I know about the short stock thing, I just hate the Monte Carlo style on an SKS it reminds me that BUBBA has a relative either in China or Russia etc,. :D
 
What I'm thinking is... make a copy of the standard SKS stock but in standard length and an extended length so that N.American shooters can use it comfortably too.

AND KEEP THE BLOODY BAYONET GROOVE!

I LOVE the look of that stock. I am gonna get one someday. People who are offended/upset by it should just not get one themselves (simple eh?), nor look at them on other's guns if it is causing them such stress....life has enough stress without adding the worry of what someone else does to modify their rifle, which has absolutely no effect on your life anyway! Stress is infinitely more dangerous to your health in Canada than guns are! ;) Don't worry, be happy!
 
X2 on powerwagons post.... If you want a real military type rifle save up for an AR 15. SKS's are great when they cost around $200.
 
I wouldn't call it stress Annie. I'd call it shock and awe at the continued flogging of a dead horse. That horse being the myth that by adding more "wizzy go fast gear" to your $129 SKS will make it more accurate, make the finish more uniform or somehow elevate your SKS into the DMR category of firearms.

I love the SKS as a plinker and a carbine. The only real mods you'd have to do to it are:

1: The Trigger: A lot of SKS triggers were put together by peasants who don't really care about trigger creep or pull. They just wanted to meet their quota of rifles and go home at the end of the day. The result's a trigger that really doesn't do the design justice. Either smooth it up yourself or pick up one from Kivaari.

2: The sights: Yeah, they work fine... but not all that great either. There are a couple you can pick up... Mojo and Tec sights being the most popular. Not really needed but nice to have.

3: The stock: This is more of a comfort issue really. Some shooters seem to complain that it's too short for them. Others would like a synthetic in the same shape and style of the original but can only find the Chinese margarine tub material type. Synthetic stocks tend to be popular because:

a: They don't warp when exposed to moisture (Lazy shooters and bushwhackers alike like 'em for this reason)
b: They're light
c: You can paint them without being called a heretic by the milsurp and wood appreciating crowd. (read: Me)

The SKS is a good little carbine that never really was meant to be a tack driver, I'll agree with that. However, a lot of potential can be unlocked with some simple (at home) upgrades that will make her truly shine and get you your moneys worth.
 
I fully agree with Canuck I Am, except that the other mod I would add is put about 1200 rounds through it. They don't smooth out too badly if you use them alot, and after a few thousand rounds your shooting has improved to the point that you can't remember what was wrong with the sights in the first place. 99 times out of 100 in the real world its not the tool, its the user, there is no substitute for putting rounds down range.Spend more on ammo and you'll need the gadgets less.
