OK, so I have cleaned my SKS twice now (three times if you count the Cosmoline removal).

What I need to know is does the Gas Tube internal, Piston Rod, and Piston get oiled, or is it left dry?

Does the piston need to be greased?

Thanks!

you will get alot of different answers from windex, boiling water to just solvent. Most people preach that you never oil the gas system, Mostly because alot of oils will collect carbon and unburned powder, cake up and bake on. Ive had this happen and its not fun to clean. I have found 2 oils that will work in the gas system however. They are Ballistol Klever and M-pro7. They are very light oils that I apply a very thin coat on the piston and inside the gas tube. The M-pro7 can be wiped gently with a clean dry patch leaving just enough to prevent rust. Alternatively you can oil with whatever you want and clean it out prior to firing, just dont forget! Grease would be about the worst thing you could put in the gas system, it will make a nasty mess.

Thank you!

I have some Boeshield T-9 it drys and can be whipped off. It's designed to repel dirt and grime, so I think I'll try that and see what happens. I clean the gun like a good Surplus Ammo shooter should.;)

I would suggest oiling it lightly however I have heard not to.

The reason I would is that when I have not oiled small amounts of rust formed on the piston rod and tube....good luck! :D

No oil. I have taken CLP (teflon based) and put it on a cloth. Placed gas tube and rubbed it clean. Then dried it on a soft cloth. Imagine there is a small amount of teflon coating it. I would not use oil, personally.

I've never oiled the gas system. Although I have dabbed a drop where the gas system connects to the barrel. Works for me.

That contact point between the gas cylinder and the gas block seems to be the most rust prone point.

After cleaning the gas cylinder with Windex, drying then cleaning with Hoppes #9 I put a drop of oil on my little finger tip and with the inside of the gas cylinder mouth. Then I put one small drop on the top of the "spigot" part of the gas block and let it run around this part. Assemble and good to go.

I oil mine, without a light coating of oil things start rusting. Never had a problem, and I always clean it after every shoot anyway

X2 I have done the same with my SKS's for several years now and it works great.

The whole idea some people have of bare metal on metal seems pretty silly to me.
Clean it oil it.
