I have 2 refurb Russian SKS's. They were both made in 1950 with matching #, and both firing pins have springs. I was wondering if there was any way to tell if the barrels are chrome lined. I know that around 1950 was when SKS barrels were chrome lined. During the refurb process would the original barrels have been replaced? After running dry patchs through each barrels they look new......

^ exactly. just look at the barrel and it should look like a silver finish on the inside. If not it's not chrome lined

Dumb question, how thick is the chrome lining? Is it a sleeve or just a very thin lining? My old chinese SKS (which I regret selling) has the two-toned metal crown like mentioned above. It really looked like a sleeve and not a plating.

I really must confess my love for chrome lined barrels, they're so resistant to corrosion.

Chrome lined barrels were an improvement but not a necessity. We're still shooting old Mosins with plain barrels that are twice the age of many SKS rifles, with the same type of corrosive ammo that is sold for SKS.

For some reason, people seem to dirty their shorts when someone talks about corrosive ammo or non-chrome lined barrels, when all they have to do is clean it after they shoot it. Illiterate peasant armies with no education could clean these rifles for over half a century, but today its a big task?

I wonder if the average person was smarter 75 years ago than today? or is it we're just lazy?

It appears that mine are not chrome.......that's OK...I was just curious. Particularly when they refurb'd them whether the barrels were change out with chrome ones. Both rifles are in super condition. A lot fun to shoot!

Neither will be chrome if the barrels are originals. Chrome was introduced during 1951 production, so some are chrome barrels and others are not.....my '51 is not.

I second this, my first Russian SKS was 1950 with spring loaded firing pin and it had a non-chrome lined barrel. The place i bought it from told me it was a chromed lined barrel...i have since grown smarter about the SKS and have learned a lot about them before i bought my next one.

I don't see the big advantage of a chromed barrel, when it comes to cleaning.
The barrel is the easiest thing to clean,
it still should be stripped down to clean the rest of the gun, after using corrosive.

I guess the chrome barrel would be a advantage if you couldn't clean it right away. As for accuracy......not to sure about that one. As the SKS is not known for accuracy.....so why bother trying. I enjoy shooting it cause of 2 reasons.......cheap rifle($168 all in each, can't go wrong), and cheap ammo=a lot of fun!!

Chinese chrome lined averaged 8" groups @ 100 yds.
Russian unchromed average 4" @ 100 yds. The 49 a bit tighter... The difference is noticable when trying to hit smaller targets while plinking in the gravel pit.:)
