Sks cosmoline removal

I've had mine baking on low heat in the oven for forever now, it won't quit sweating the stuff out! Wonder if (now that MOST of it is out) I can throw a coat of shellac or poly or something on it and seal in the stuff that hasn't come out so it doesn't feel so greasy?

I boiled all my small bits and ran boiling water through the barrel assembly, then brake cleaner to get hte brown smeg off everything and then gun coditioner, both my SKS's look fantastic. I did replace my stocks with Monte Carlo, better length and ergonomically better.

Simple Green is what I use, have used and will ever use, it's bio-degradable, easy on your hands and smells nice. Cuts through cosmoline better than any product I've tried.
Just disassemble, scrub all parts with a brush, rinse with water, dry with air compressor, lube and your done. No boiling, baking, soaking for days or stinking up the house!

It's $9 at canadian tire in the automotive dept., get the "degreaser" version, comes in a black windex style bottle.

I switched to Simple Green as well. Very pleased with how quickly it works and being bio-degradeable doesn't hurt either.

Well I used brake cleaner. Also a bit of hot water to rinse. Its amazing how well the brake cleaner worked. Got the firing pin nice and loose, and I put a light coating of oil on the barrel to ensure it was dry. Now just gotta wait for a sunny day so the stock can sit outside and let the cosmo sweat out.

Did you use the Simple Green on the stock as well? I picked up a couple spray bottles of the degreaser version, and plan to exorcise the cosmo this weekend. This seems to be a rite of passage into the SKS world, so hopefully I pass the test.

I used a heat gun to melt the cosmoline. You will need several rags to wipe it away, then finish with a good solvent bore cleaner.

I used boiling water, a little bit of dawn, and 2 tooth brushes. Poured boiling water down the barrel. After removing cosmoline I gave it a thin coat of oil on all the parts that required it. NOT the piston. Worked good.

Our local gun dealer said he used varsol, tooth brushes and compressed air to blow them dry. He used this on several guns with no problems.

if the stock is not coming clean set the bare stock in the sun until the stock starts to weep oil then wipe it with a clean soft cloth, repeat if needed.

Boiled water from a kettle I believe works best, brake cleaner and time.

For those that play guitar, here's a sweet tip:
