Why not just buy an SKS-d? But I guess if you have a beater SKS, it might be interesting to see a project through.

bcos a "D" cost 2.5x more and also i have 2 reg sks so i thought it would be nice to convert one so i could get variety, BTW they are not beaters but at $149 cheap enuff to try a conversion but i think i better go with a duckbill 30 mag, at least it gives me the same appearance as a "D".

Do not get excited. This conversion sucks big time. I tried it years ago long before D models flooded the country. Here are the problems with this type of conversion.
1-Welding a keystock the way it is described will place the front of the mag to low in the magwell causing severe feeding problems.
2-The mag catch conversion is very unfortunate and complicated.
3- Good luck on milling out the material from the mag well , extremely tricky.
My advise: forget it , spend money and get a "D".

I wonder if there is any other info out there on the mag catch conversion part of this build. And Kasat, what do you mean by unfortunate and complicated?

I mean exactly what it says. It is much easier to TIG weld an AK style mag catch to the exisitng trigger group than designing and milling a custom part that looks wierd and has to be pulled back instead of pushed forward on mag removal like on AK. As I said before it is much cheaper to buy a D model than converting a standard SKS to D unless one has proper tools , time and treats it as a challenge. In that case by all means go for it !!!!!!!!

thats what i did, instead of converting one of my two reg SKS , i sold one and bot a CZ858 , i really like it cos it feels much more like a AK and i also bot a folding stock to go with it.:dancingbanana:

hey guys, have any of you taken an exsisting sks-d and removed just the stock materiel to allow the use of 5/75 rd. drum mags.?
im looking at doing that, just want to know if it will weaken the stock too much, or cause regular mags to fit loosely? i ave both a wood and synthetic stock for my "d", thinking the synthetic stock would be easiest to grind out.
any thoughts or experience in this matter would be greatly appreciated!
thanks,

I'll shoot you a PM Lion-o. It's not hard, just takes a little pashants and alot of dremel work. Looks bad ass though.
