Can anyone help identify this SKS-D rifle. It came with No bayonet. The lug looks like cut at the factory. The gas tube is a different length as well.

Pic of bottom of LUG.

It looks like the 90s consumer version SKS-D that came with a bipod rather than a bayonet. I had an older catalogue with pics but can't seem to locate it at this minute.

You would be better off comparing it to a Chinese production gun (actual Chinese military not a commercial one like the SKS-D). The Chinese SKS are slightly different in dimensions than the Russian ones. I don't have a Chinese one to compare my Russian one too anymore so I can't give you more details than that (though I suspect you could find a comparison online).

There is a spring loaded stud installed in the modified bayonet mount to prevent loss of the missing cleaning rod.

That would explain why the cleaning rod is so hard to get out. LOL
I owned a couple sks-d models years ago and they had bayonets. I didn't think they made a military version of the sks-d ?? So,...this is a non military then,,,,consumers model ? I'm lost. I thought the 2 D models I owned years ago "with bayonet" were commercial. I have never seen Any sks except the M-trooper that didn't come with a bayonet. 1st one Ive ever seen,....cant even find a pic on the web !! Scarce as Hens teeth.

I have one in my safe and have seen many the same way without a bayo. Frontier firearms had these once upon a time, that's were mine was bought I was told. I bought it from the original owner in unfired, mint condition.

It's an SKS-D just like what the receiver says. It is one of the versions the US gun nuts didn't get to see. Sks files dot Com is in the process of documenting the versions we got before and after the US imports stopped.

All SKS with detachable AK mags are commercial. Not all are called D models. There are a variety of names. SKS-M, SKS-D, MC-5D, a no model marked version with blade bayo and sks style magazine released marked "made by xz" and so on. Sks files has a whole group of pages dedicated to the commercial versions with pictures.

Canadian variants pending.

02 would seem to indicate this is a 2002 receiver. Everyone of the non bayo versions is marked 02 with a following serial number, at least what I've seen. If anyone has one stamped differently I'd love to see it.

The 02 follows the current chinese dating methods seen on m305, Type 81 and Type 97 serial numbers to note a few.

After a ton of research here are my findings. --
when I bought the rifle it came in an ATI stock. I thought this was something the previous owner did. So I took the stock off and put on a wooden one to make it look like the original. Wrong!! It DID come from the factory with the ATI. here is the info I found.

•Added category: First conversion by Midwest Ordnance. This is the one that the Chinese came over and looked at then went back and made the 84's and then the D's. It was sold in the ATI folder stock with a filler in the mag well, 20-inch barrel, and no bayonet.

So I am putting back in its ATI stock as it came from the factory. I never knew any of this ! Nor have I ever seen one before. I bet I will never see another.

Does it also have the MO stamped on the magazine release lever? The magazine well insert would also have Midwest Industries Det MI Patent Pending stamped on it as well.

Yours doesn't have the appearance of having the proper magazine released to be a MO version, and the receiver is dated 02, and the MO guns were made in the 80's.

It isn't a MO then. The one you have came in a wood stock that lacked a cutout for a bayonet. I have pictures of other examples I can post tomorrow. A more likely guess is someone put it in that aftermarket stock and ditched the original wood stock.

Edit: here is what it looks like in original setup... Ignore the magazine, they came with short stubby mags. This one is in a replacement stock which has a spike cutout, but the stock profile is the same.

The one I posted also has the same serial number and brand marks on the left side of the receiver. 02 number, SKS-D.

100% sure of the type. You need to find yourself a Chinese wood stock with no bayonet groove if that is your goal. Or just enjoy it as is. Fun guns.

Yup, mine came with a 5 round mag as well. That's fencelines rifle pictured, but mine is exactly the same except my hand guard wood matches perfect. LOL

Was a restoration project for a friend. It has the proper wood stock now as well and the wood matches with the proper stock. Was covered in paint and had a wickedly poor custom stock. Nice blueing once the paint was gently washed away with Hoppes. It had a different receiver cover that pressured screwed into the sides of the receiver, hence those little silver circles in the pic above the wood line.
