I am starting to look seriously into buying a SKS and I could need some advice on what to choose. I want to use detachable magazines so wich way is the better to go, SKS-D or using the Tapco`s mags?

Thanks

Well an SKS-D almost costs as much as a CZ 858 and the CZ is a much better rifle. The duckbill mags aren't really all that great, I had a couple and I sold them in favor of the regular magazine and stripper clips.

SKS-D Pros: Detachable mags, cheaper magazines and plentiful.
Cons: expensive, made in china

SKS with duckbill magazines: Generally they suck, although the tapco ones are pretty good. Rifle is cheap but magazines are expensive.

Ok, thanks for the heads up on Tapco mag.

I am not a big fan of the 858 look, even if it's better, I am looking for a plinker. I was thinking of 450$ ish for a SKS-D, is that in the ball park?

Not the one I have. I have to take out the trigger group if I want to pull the magazine.

If the Tapco duckbill mag that you have is not removable than it is the 10 round fixed. That is the only mag in the Tapco SKS line that is not removable. If it is any other Tapco duckbill type then you have a problem, you should be able to remove the mag.

$400 to $450 used is about where the pricing should be for a D. Had mine for years and it has gone without a hitch. They look and handle pretty good in a Tapco stock ..

Cz 858's are actually more expensive ( $700 - $725 ) but I wouldn't say they are better, just a different flavor.

you can get a good SKS-D for alot less than a CZ 858 and AK mags are way more expensive than tapco. $50 to $70 each for AK and $30 for Tapco.

Do you own a CZ? They are much better in every way IMO. The mags are made for the rifle and lock in/rock out much more positively than a D. Lighter, far more balanced, more accurate, better ergonomics, more features and way better aftermarket parts. In my mind its a superior rifle well worth the premium price tag. I like the D but prefer my CZ and plain Russian SKS over it. Just my 2 cents

That was my plan to go with a Tapco stock, I have one for my 10/22 and I am pretty happy with it.

It's a Tapco 5 / 20 round mag, and I can't pull it out.

I.M.O ... says it all. As a matter of fact I shoot both regularly, and with the Tapco stock the AK mags are just as smooth loading in the D as a tuned up CZ. Out of the box, the gray paint on the CZ mags made for sticky reloading until the coating was worn off. I find the CZ a bit too light for my liking actually, and the ergonomics of the Tapco T6 stock even it out in the comfort and balance department. The accuracy of the D I have is very comparable to the CZ 858 non-restricted model I shoot. If we were talking original stock SKS-D vs I might agree with you on the mag changes. Like I said, different flavor but just as good with the T6 stock in the equation. Also, AK mags should running around the $45 - $50 mark in Canada .. don't use EE as the blue book of pricing.

The CZ also has a well known trigger mechanism issue, fixable, but the 'superiority' goes into question right there.

Zero Zero 3, if you are able to get out and try one of each, make up your own mind as to which one is suited better to you.

Good info right there, thanks.

I tried a chinese SKS last year and I enjoyed it, minus the LOP that is too short for me. No CZ on the horizon for me to try over here.

I am pretty much sold on the SKS anyways so it would be nice if this thread could stay on the track.

Now what about the quality of the SKS-D? anything different from the others?

The first one I had was one of the first to show up over here in the early nineties. The fit and finish was pretty good and I don't recall ever having any mechanical problems. It was comparable to any other regular SKS I came across except the Russian ones .. the Russians are nicer. The D I picked up a few years back ( that I currently have ) had the bayonet lug milled off ... ... but the fit, finish and reliability was there like the first one. The T6 stock is really the deal maker. If you don't T6 stock it you are going to have the same short LOP problem as a regular one, and the long mags make for a funny balance. Short mags, no different than the standard, but a pig to change.

Some have an issue because it's a Norinco product, but that's a personal thing.

Pardon the side track earlier, I didn't expect a personal attack.

Cheers ..

No worries about the side track, it happens all the time on here.

I know they are all too short for me but the D's not being a non-refurb or anything collectable I have no problems to slap a better stock on it.

What is the problem with the short mags? I don't like longer mags that I can't load to capacity, it kinda look fake to me like a fake silencer can or stuff like that. So I would prefer to get shorts mags only.

What is quality to you. The SKS D is a commercial grade rifle, made for the consumer. Do you want a threaded or a pinned barrel? Is it important that the action stay open after the last round fired. There is more quality out there right now with the Russian refurb's and brand new Chinese military grade SKS that are on the market now. To spend $400.00 to $500.00 for a SKS D does not make sense to me, for what a removable AK stye magazine
