SKS-D or Tapco Mags

I want to use it for plinking, so that's why I want to be able to change mags, just like I do with my 10/22. I don't really care for quality or barrel assy, as long that it shoot good and it's reliable. Of course it would be much easier if we could get those mod kits from the US.

I know they are all too short for me but the D's not being a non-refurb or anything collectable I have no problems to slap a better stock on it.

What is the problem with the short mags? I don't like longer mags that I can't load to capacity, it kinda look fake to me like a fake silencer can or stuff like that. So I would prefer to get shorts mags only.

The short mags are just physically a ##### to lever in and out, even with the T6 ... there is just not enough to hang onto to rock them in smoothly. I only kept one of my shorties for prone shooting. The long ones hook and lever in quite well with all the extra to hang onto, and if you plan on utilizing mag pouches/carriers they don't really make any suitable for the short mags. I also do hold out hope that the stupid mag regs will someday fall and the full capacity mags will be back in vogue.

If you wind up getting the shorties, I modified some hard plastic AR mag-puls to the base plates to make loading easier .. can't remember who I sold them to on here though. They looked a bit conversation-worthy, but worked a bit better.

As for the bolt locking back, that's a personal thing again, IMO. Never bothered me ... shoot until it doesn't shoot anymore, change mag, repeat.

I don't care that the bolt doesn't lock back, just the nature of the beast. As for the short mags I am pretty sure that I will figure out something to make it easier. I am with you on the full capacity mags!!

Well I think that I will definitely go with a SKS-D, is yours for sale? lol.

Heheheheh .... not a chance. :D

Then you have some fitment concerns, which is normal and easy to fix. Search youtube there is tons of information. Here is a link to one.

Well I'll be damned, I just went and checked and it works like a charm now. I must have been trying to remove the magazine with the bolt closed.

I have a Norinco SKS and I have tried the removable tapco mags in it, there is a problem with the bolt catch either being stuck up or stuck down because the mags don't fit quite right.

doubletap, that was not a "personal attack" it was a difference of opinion. I own a D and an 858 and much prefer the 858 for many reasons hence my opinion, not personal attack. AK mags start at $45 and go up, CZ mags start at $25 and theres more available. Dont forget that everything you posted is an opinion as well, just because someone else has a different opinion than yours doesnt make me wrong. Its all there for the OP to consider but it looks like hes made his decision.

My Tapco 5/20 mag goes in and out just fine in my Tula. Didn't even have to shave the stock. A Russian refurb is way higher quality than any SKS-D. And AK mags are more expensive, I bought my mag for $40 off a vendor here. I would never, ever pay double the money for an inferior product. At the end of the day, absolutely the only thing you can say over a milsurp SKS with an SKS-D is that you get to use AK mags.

This was what I was talking about. The SKS-D IS almost as expensive as a CZ 858. That thing is 500, you can get a CZ 858 for 650 used easy and the OP is planning on putting one of those 100 dollar Tapco stocks on it. So you are at 600 vs 650 for a rifle that isn't even in the same league.

I asked questions about the SKS-D and mag options, not what you would do with my money.

Well once again, I hate when post derail because people can't stick to the main subject. I don't care about the 858 so I don't need to here about it.

No, but you are trying to pay too much for too little, apparently. The point isn't that a CZ858 is a better gun in every way (which it is), the point is that it's in the same price bracket as an SKS-D, which has no right being there and has nothing over a regular SKS. I would bet my money that a good Russian is more accurate even with milsurp ammo, too, although that will go to hell no matter what kind of SKS you buy if you slap an aftermarket stock on it.

refurb russian sks <$200
Tapco mags ~50 each

Tapco stock ~$100-$150??

sounds like the D will end up costing more, depending on how many mags you want.

I bought one tapco mag for my russian, I mostly load it with stripper clips because its faster but its good to have the option of it being detachable, and it looks good with the tapco mag sticking out.... (see my avatar pic)

Well he did say he wanted detachable mags like his 10/22, the D is certainly less finnicky because the mags were designed as detachable, rather than duckbills that adapt a hinged floorplate to detachable mag system. I personally prefer the 858 mag system as well as everything it has over an SKS which is why I defended it when someone said its got nothing on a D. So with that in mind my opinion is the D falls somewhere between duckbills and a CZ. You dont need the bolt open or modified to remove or insert the mags and the mag release is much more positive than a type 45/56 SKS. Feeding has been very reliable in mine and there are even a few parts on the rifle with better finish than Military SKS rifles. If you want an SKS and good detachable mags for it, the D is king.
