SKS-D weighing my options for a stock choice

collectors will pay more if the "D" has original wood stock.

Still have all my original hardware & stock .
The factory D stocks are prone to cracking.
So it is in the original serial numbered box the gun came in from Lever Arms back in the 80's .
Alan sold them in investor packs of 5 rifle's @ $125.00 per rifle .
Wish I still had the other 4 !;)

Let's be honest, the factory D stock is not exactly nice looking so why should I waste money on it, hoping to get more out of it when I sell it? It ain't worth it spending $200 or whatever.

As mentioned, even without that original look, I did not pay much, so not worried about how much a potential collector would pay for it.

Mine came with what I was told was an SKS-M stock. It's one of the nicer ones I've ever seen. I'm not sure if it's possible to source them anywhere though.

There is one on gp for $80 without the metal insert. Looks okay but that's about it. No offense.

thats why you got it for cheap cos a collector wouldnt be interested in yours, not in good shape. no offense.

wasnt the standard sks was selling for $99 when the "D" was at $125? "D" is only 26% higher . compare that to todays prices... a wopping 300%. wow, you did well.

that stock is called the monte carlo stock, also comes in the mc-5d (california model).

Cleaned everything up now. The receiver and barrel were already almost mint. The moving parts HAD carbon deposits (you can see the underside of the bolt in the one pic I posted) - check the Internet how to get rid of it.

Not a speck of rust.

The stock is sh... but I had the void filled and the sides epoxied as mentioned. Mags in is now a breeze. The 10 rounder is a bit of a pain since you don't have the angle to push it in past the spring tension but that is true for all of them and I don't want to mess with the spring.

"Not in good shape" - pff.

Don't ask me for pictures again.

No worries but it is not in bad shape, it is not new either. Of course the current stock distracts from the overall condition.

Yours look great but as mentioned, I am not a big fan of the stock/wood but it's your thing so all good.

I paid $750 with a scope and mount which I already sold locally for $200. I showed it in it's current stage to a few friends and they all told me not to change the "Vietnam era look". One of them bought a newly imported Chinese this year and his is full of rust under the wood, paid almost the same net as me. It did not even fire due to the rust but I made it work for him. Garbage.

yours may not be a collector grade but net at $550 is a damn good deal. good job.

you remind me of what i did early last year. i bought a chinese standard with a timbersmith stock for $400 and in a week i sold the stock for $200. i replaced the stock with a regular stock for $50 so my net is $250, all transactions was done locally. good deal.

back in the frenzy before the LGR and the prohib classification of a lot of fun toys, a small group of us bought a pallet of "D" model SKS rifles for 99.00 each with a case of norinco silver box in spam cans for every 5 rifles on the pallet. They were not in military style transit boxes, just carboard and styro. Each rifle came with a 30 round mag but interestingly and wish I had "collecting" on my mind.... there were I think 6 of the model MC 5 D in the monte carlo stocks with the rubber butt pad. These came with 2 of the shorty mags.
I think in total there were 36 rifles on the pallet? We kept the best and sold the rest. I did keep a MC5D model but after a few thousand rounds it was ripping cases in half and leaving the other half in the chamber. Tried cleaning every which way is safe to do to a firearm and it continued to have chamber ejection issues..... it went to a friend for spare parts iirc.

I am embarking on SKS-D composite project stock #4...... and here is what I will be starting with.
Found a few loose odds and ends that I don't have much use for otherwise.... and a useless to me brand new NEA 7inch quad rail I decided to chop up..... has a high rail and the hole for the gas tube (pic 4) is darn near perfect to see thru with the sights set anywhere from 0 to 200 and as you look thru it the circular gas tube relief almost matches the front sight ghost ring..... Gonna be a fun project. Plan will be to have the handguard attach to the new stock versus attaching to the rifle itself.......

In 1995 the SKS-D (MC-5D) was $120 and the regular Chinese SKS was $75 at the gunshop I went too.

The MC-5D had the softest wood stock I have ever seen.
