My friend has a Norinko SKS-D, I might get it from him. It doesn't feed the rounds properly so I stripped it apart and looked it over closely. It looks and feels like the bottom of the bolt has been worn down (almost like it was ground down or sanded.) Can I bring it to a welder and have it built up and then smoothed out? I'm not asking if it is worth it, Just if it will work. What do you think?
Mods, If this should be in gunsmithing please move it. Thanks

You certainly "can". The bottom of the SKS-D bolt was ground down at the factory to allow the gun to work with AK mags.

What he said; but if you do the AK mags will no longer fit the rifle. The ground down area is for clearance for the very robust AK feed lips. If your having feeding problems more details are needed and maybe some pics of the bolt and chamber area. You could try some different mags as well but AK mags are usually bullet proof.

I bought a SKS because it wasn't feeding properly. I cleaned the gas system and haven't had a problem yet.

I'm not saying your problem is that simple, but mine was.

On another note, I believe the bolt is just made that way on the SKS-D. Mine seems to fit your description as well. Its to slap in the AK mag. (like mentioned above)

Pictures would definitely help.

You're sure it isn't just the magazines? Most feeding problem I've heard of are caused by the magazine having damaged lips.

Ok so there is a lightbulb clicking on now. I was told that the guy that sold it to the gunshop that my friend bought it from, sold it with a 38 round banana mag and according to the store owner she, "had to turn it in to the cops because it was illegal" (Sure she did). I wonder if the 38 rounders are set up differently? If so I'll see if I can find a 5/38 round mag to try. If that doesn't work then I'll try to build up the bolt a little. I can't post pics yet, but eventually I'll have the technology. I have 2 of the 5 round mags and it's the same with both mags.
thanks guys, Hitch

Never heard of a 38 round AK mag before but I could be wrong. Most common Ak mags are 30 rnd. and probably lots of short 5 rnd. mags in Canada. I think I have seen some 40 rnd. mags but I don't know how common they are in Canada.

The feed lips on these mags are very robust and hard to damage so they are very reliable. Don't monkey with your bolt before posting some pics here so we can see exactly what you have.
