I just got back from the range with my SKS-D.
Suprisingly accurate for an SKS!

I cleaned it when I first got it. I have he original 5 round AK-47 mag and am shooting Checz surplus ammo.

Problem: Several failure to chamber. The tip of the bullet would go into the chamber and end up pinched by the breech block. I would pull slightly back on the bolt and let it slam shut thereby loading the round and firing normally.

Is this typical with the SKS-D? Maybe could it be insufficient lubrification? I did NOT oil it properly after cleaning as I misunderstood the recommendation to NOT oil the gas pistons and their mecanisms to include bolt and carrier. They were squeeky clean tho.

I have now oiled the bolt, breach and grooves in the receiver but can't test fire until next weekend.

Just wondering if there is any other "tweaking" I may have to do?

Thanks.

Next time at the range load the same mag with 5 rounds , point the gun down range , pull back on the bolt carrier and while holding the charging handle chamber the first round VERY SLOWLY observing what happens to the round when it enters the chamber. Post your findings afterwards.

i have had similar happenings with my d, it seems to be more with certain mags that i have, and it doesnt seem to matter. some of my 5 rnds do that, and even some of my 5/30 s also do this. i cleaned up the mags that this appened to and it seemed to clear them up. i was out shooting today with it and had no problems with the mags.

My solution has been to take a dremmel to the mag lips so that the ammo sits up a little higher in the mag.

I'd really appreciate if you could post or send me a pic of "where" to grind with the Dremel.

I have 4 other mags on the way.

Thanks again. ;)

I can't get pics foryou yet but basicly look at the top of the mag and you can see the feed lips that holdthe rounds in. You want to take material away from under the lips (be careful not to take too much) so the rounds sit higher up and closer to the bolt when in the firearm. Just use one mag and work on it till you think you have it right and then replicate your results with the other mags you have.

had the samething happen when i didn't let the bolt slam when i chambered the first round. it was never the rifle, just me being too gentle

It happened on the 2nd, or 3rd rounds. When the cartridge doesn't fully chamber, the breech whacks it and the projectile gets slightly bent. I then have to scrap the cartridge.

The problem as I see it is that the rounds sit a little low in the magazine causing the bullet to hit the face of the chamber instead of actually going into the chamber.

I have had no issues with my D whatsoever, it has never failed to fuction as it should.no matter what mags I have used. I have two 30/5 mags and the 5rnd thing that came with it.
Got an ATI folder for it today, it's much better quality than I thought it would be.
