SKS dirty questions? Lol

Just a quick questions. My SKS gets dirty far quicker than all my other guns even rimfire rifles running bulk pack ammo. I have had the rifle a little over a year and purchased it in unissued unfired condition (French tickler Chinese rifle). I meticulously cleaned all the cosmoline out. I have just about 600 rounds through the rifle of all Norinco non-corrosive red box ammo. I am religious about cleaning this rifle after every range visit because I don’t trust the non corrosive part.

My last outing I shot 60 rounds out of it. Brought it home and cleaned it the next morning. It was dirtier than normal, with hard to clean off carbon deposits on my gas piston and the bolt and chamber being heavily soiled, more than normal I’d say. Also found deposits of what I originally feared to be rust but seemed to be more the copper coating from the rounds. Gun function all day perfectly and accuracy was also quite pleased (was a great day where you feel you just can’t miss).

My question is more, Do Sks’s run dirtier than most or is it the ammo I’m shooting? And with a change in dirtiness from one range visit to the next, should one be concerned or am I just over analyzing. And lastly any one try PMC ammo in there SKS does it run cleaner (bloody better for near twice the cost).

Are you comparing it to other short stroke gas operated semi's or completely different action types? My vz58 runs about as dirty as my SKS in the gas system, shooting the same surplus ammo.

Norinco red box is just dirty ammunition. If I run my reloads cast or jacketed I done have anywhere near the amount of dirt buildup. I have a lot of red box due to buying when Cabela’s had sales. For the price I’ll put up with the extra crude.

No only rifle comparison I have would be direct blow back in 22lr as far as semi auto goes. I suppose my beretta A301 shotgun is a gas piston of some sort but I don’t think that works as a comparison either.

This was more an observation and curiosity of my SKS not exactly a complaint. As in all honestly my SKS is one of my favorite rifles I have ever purchased.

Meh, SKS if used appropriately is naturally a dirty girl, just hose off and carry on. :)

APU, I've got just the hose . . .

Tinybear, as Snider said Nor is dirty as Heck. One thing to do is run your gas piston DRY, both in the tube and on the piston. And If you clean with 'soapy' hot water is will come clean faster. I run Chi Mil Surp almost exclusively and I can clean in 20 min. And Boretech C4 will help get off that Carbon crap. Also, Rust is red, Copper is 'gold'.

I find all Norinco ammo to be very dirty. Make sure that you disassemble the bolt and remove the firing ping to clean in there. Dirt and corrosion builds up leading to slam fires unless you are careful.

Good point 55recce, Make sure it's NOT oiled in there, too. Gotta stay 'dry' to stay clean (see those ladies above). I only put PTFE grease on the bolt-rails and the Sear-notch and rails. I've got the sear polished and ca 3# trigger with NO other mods.

My SKS ran dirty too, the fouling on 100 rounds surplus or 160ish norinco non corrosive was comparable to 400-500 rounds of Ball ammo through my AR or WKs.

Just the nature of the mechanism, never saw either of them fail

There is nothing to worry about. I have exactly the same Chinese French Tickler like the OP. An SKS must go dirty when shooting with Chinese surplus or red box Norinco. That's the nature of the beast. I always do primary cleaning with hot water and some Ballistol in it. Then pure Ballistol in the barrel and gas tube and on the bolt/bolt carrier, wipe dry. Never ever a speck of rust.
