SKS...DMR? Is this real or imaginary

The only country to ever field a “real” DMR SKS are the Yugoslavians. Some were purpose built by JNA armourers with a ON-2 or M89 scopes as observer rifles for M76 sniper teams. The other half were field expedient rifles with a mix-mash of optics used by “soldiers of fortune” snipers or militia members.

A few original JNA M59/66 rifles with side rails for M89 or PN5x80 night vision scopes were imported by Marstar a long while back. I have never seen any on the EE or posted on the forums so who ever has them must be hoarding them... or bubba’d them.

The Russians also made experimental DMR rifles... fat chance seeing one of those on the Canadian market.

If it’s not one of those, it’s complete B.S.

The Designated Marksman concept didn't enter the Soviet doctrine the way it has in the US military. The average Russian rifleman was/is/will be issued a stock Kalashnikov, some magazines, and a bayonette. Their BMP infantry vehicles are really small inside, and the folding stock AKM was essential to meet the concept. A certain number of troops have squad machine guns, and an even smaller number have SVD sniper rifles. But no ordinary soldier would be trusted with something unusual or expected to be anything special.

Arguably the guy with the SVD is the designated marksman, that'll ruffle some red rifle fan boy feathers but really even with the sniper rounds I've never seen any spectacular reviews of SVD accuracy. Flame suit on.

In both Desert Sniper and Long Shot, the Dragunov-and-its-scope is readily acknowledged as basically being of a "DMR-quality"... :yingyang:

Yah i dont get the gunshow hate.... theres always interesting stuff to see, the Calgary Gun Show is the only time i get to see things like Fn 49s, Rasheeds, Garands, M31s, K&M 17s etc in person. Deals may be few and far between, but they do exist. Last Calgary Gun Show a vendor had like 6 fixed Type 81s asking $950 each. I thought that price was more then fair.

Never seen that since. I always wondered abought those two. The fit and finish was great. They did not last long.

Good point because the original topic was SKS as a DMR, so we'd need to consider if the SKS' service overlapped the SVD's.

Yes, the circular accuracy of the SVD was pathetic compared to just about everything else on the battlefield. You'd have better luck and attract less attention to use the open sights on the long barrel AK squad automatic rifle in 7.62x39.

stick around the EE enough you find all those things, at better deals. if you don't get the gun show hate you have either had very good experiences, or, and please don't take offence at this, you are relatively new to the hobby and don't know yet the difference between good experiences and gun show experiences/ you are an older boy and the gun show life is what you've known for so long you don't know there are better options out there

im going to guess its the first though, you have just been lucky that in your area the gunshows are good. in Ontario the shows are terrible. years ago there was way better stuff for sure, these days however its just nc star garbage, over priced terrible throwaway guns, $700 mixed nukmber sks and mosins, old Damascus double barrels for 1000, obsolete calibre rifles in crap condition for 3000, ect.

i will note, the gunshows i used to go to in ontario were the ones in Markham, port perry, orangeville, woodstock, and pickering, perhaps other shows in ontario arent crap and they are just way too far way for me to drive to, but i will guarantee there is nothing there i cant find on the equipment exchange at a better price

I call BS. Military arms channel seemed to easily demonstrate 1.3 MOA from his SVD....

Your response to my comment makes zero sense.

I stated that if nothing else gun shows can be a good place to observe guns people would normally never see in their area. = generally true

I also stated that deals are few and far between.... BUT they can be occasionally found at a gun show. = also true
