I've decided that I will buy an SKS and change the stock out.

Before I buy one does the year matter? Any particular years bad? Vs good?

I dont like the spring loaded firing pin on early russian model(1949-mid 1951) for 2 reasons:
-If the firing pin ever broke, original part for early SKS maybe hard to find, ofc you can get a Murray's firing pin for thoses.
-Only the extractor spring hold the extractor in place,no problems in the rifle but if you field strip the rifle for cleaning, when the bolt is out of the carrier, the extractor can be knocked off too easily, again if you are carefull its ok.Personally, i would prefer a russian 1952 and up, with the free floating firing pin. Chinese are good, no problems but i prefer the russians ones, they are nicer. Just my opinion:)

Year doesn't matter unless you're a collector. For me I like 1952 for the FF firing pin and nicer gas block. That's kind of irrelevant for you. All military SKS are good. They are super tough and reliable no matter the year or country of origin. Just don't buy a commercial Chinese SKS. Those were the only low quality ones made. You can spot them a mile away with a blade bayonet, very shiny smooth finish with an almost orange tinge. The wood grain looks more like a lighter north american birch and they say SKS and MADE IN CHINA on the side of the receiver. The Chinese military SKS on the market right now with spike bayonets, flat bottom for end and factory symbol/serial number on the reciever are just as well made as the Russian SKS. Just not as pretty as Joce mentioned. The Chinese have little collector value so you can feel less guilty about chopping one up and having your way with it.

3 guys in this thread that DON'T have an Sks? I thought you needed an Sks to join cgn? And you guys call yourselves Canadians? Lol. Just kidding guys!! Buy an Sks!!! What can you get these days for $200?? I've only had the Russian Sks. Well made and extremely durable. Once you take it shooting you'll be thinking "why didn't I get one sooner?". Most fun you can have for $200. Well legally anyway. Lol. If you don't like it. I highly doubt that! You can sell it on the EE and make $50-$100 profit :)

Yerh like someone mentioned earlier, if you want to swap parts out and change the stock and whatnot, maybe get a chinese one. russian ones are best left alone.
