Sks don't need piston return spring.

 Well I need to get one, but they run fine without them! I've been shooting a Norinco SKS for almost 1000 rounds, and just read today that there's supposed to be a spring for the piston, which mine hasn't had. Talk about a durable rifle!

I'm thinking something from the hardware store cut to size will be OK. But can someone describe roughly how big the spring is compared to the cylinder, like how much play does it have with the walls, and where does the piston rest when the spring is not compressed?

The gas piston extension and spring are inside the receiver underneath the rear sight.....there is no spring on the gas piston.

You should be able to get parts from marstar or lever arms pretty cheap if you need them.

Have you looked at a parts diagram for the SKS?

I posted a parts diagram but it's from a site that doesn't always show up for some reason. Does your spring come out when you take the piston out? I'm assuming the spring is just wide enough to sit on that ledge in there, but would appreciate a measurement of length or width if anyone has one handy.

Coltfan I dig it, but a $10 spring for a $100 rifle doesn't work for me.

by the time you go looking for the correct size spring, the correct tension , you have already spent $10 of your time.

remember there is alot of force exerted to the piston extension and without a spring it is slamming against metal , it should be against a spring that is design to take that kind of a force without breaking.

I seriously doubt that your missing your piston spring, as I can't see how it would cycle properly without it.

Have you looked under the rear site?

Once you take the main piston, and gas tube off, you can with one finger push the smaller piston that is under the rear site, and then turn the release latch towards the muzzle, and carefully allow the small piston, and small spring to come out...WARNING, this spring is under allot of pressure, and will fly far if your finger slips. :D

could it be he fired 1000 rounds and not know there is a piston extention with spring under the rear sight? hmmmm, the piston extention is seriously in need of cleaning.:D
