I have to ask, what it is about the SKS that motivates some people to buy quantities of 5-10, or more of the same gun/same configuration? I really enjoy the combloc and black guns, but the ones I have multiples of all have significant differences (ie: I have 2 Norc AKs- one fixed stock 7.62X39, but the other is a folder in .223; I will have 2 SKS rifles- 1 a basic Norc, and I have a Russian on the way).
So what is it that attracts some to have significant numbers of the same rifle?

In case this is coming out wrong- it is meant as a legitimate question, not sarcasm. I am curious as to why.
 
Many are virtually new. It's been a very long time since any surplus guns in that shape have come here and with the future of international surplus sales unpredictable many are just striking while the iron is hot. Making good the opportunity to acquire nice examples for fun/investment.

Likewise, reasonable pricing makes purchasing attractive and easy.

Cheap, very reliable shooters that you don't care about. Lend them to your licenced friends and family. Good SHTF handout rifles. TBS I have only one.

Every man should have at least one SKS and half a crate of ball.
 
Pak Ratitis,...and oh yeah..lots of history, technology,and innovation in the rifle that was the forerunner of the Avtomat Kalashnikova...plus the price is good and they are fun to shoot!..

I am not sure about this part. I agree with you, but if you read the 4 million posts on the Rusky SKS's that are now coming in, many people do not even want to shoot them, never mind get a scratch on one. Finding a Rusky in unissued condition in the last many years has been quite difficult, just finding a Rusky SKS in any condition has been hard. So I am guessing this is why people have been buying them up and not wanting to shoot them.

I myself found one that was unissued after being refurbed, an have had no problem using it and having fun with it. Lets face it, these are not $1000 rifles.
 
I like the way this importation flies in the face of accepted myths surrounding russian military firearms. For example "There is no such thing as an unissued, unrefurbed military firearms in Russia" well that went down the toilet. How about russian sks are substandard junk? The machine work & fitting on mine are fantastic so thats down the tubes too. I don't want to shoot mine because it looks like it was built using some recycled parts right from the get go & thats never been documented before. That has lead to a search for a heavily refurbed bell import.
 
When your buying a 7.62x39mm firing semi automatic rifle that costs under $300, goes bang everytime you pull the tigger, ammo available by the crates, why would you ever only buy one?!

Russian, Norcs, Early Chinese, Yugo M59, Yugo M59/66, ect.
Plus different factories from the same country & different manufacturing techniques in the same factories at different times.
So there are some differences that can be found in rifles from the same factory during different years.
I think a factory spring loaded firing pin from Russia would be neat to have.

You will see them in the EE for twice what they cost .
Its called capitalism. Which is OK .
Just ironic that former soviet communist rifles are now a hot commodity in Canada
 
In a couple of month's,they will start to show up on the EE.The next Fad will take hold and there will some liquidation of SKS........................me included.
 
For me it's the fact I can buy the rifle and 1120 rounds of 30 calibre ammo for less than one regular hunting rifle! Less is more that way.
There's also the bizarre connection in the background that these rifles were built to "crush capitalism" and I find it cool that I now get to have it as my ultimate plinker gun instead! :D
Since I won't ever be able to own a real AK-47 I like the SKS just because the front end looks the same and it uses the same ammo too. How sad is that, eh?
I think the bottom line is the attraction can be traced purely to affordability.

I have observed the same which reinforces my view that the Soviet arsenal system wasted nothing. Makes sense given a history of perpetual arms shortages from Czarist times onward.
 
I grabbed 4...

(1) I jumped on the SIR $169 Russian SKS's that have yet to arrive... (Who didn't?...)

(2) Then I jumped on the Frontier shipment cause I feared NOT getting my SIR SKS with all the backorders @ SIR... curtton is a bad bad man, ha ha ha...:slap:

(3) Then I jumped on the MilArm shipment when you pointed out they had just received their shipment... So, RobAK, your also a bad bad man, ha ha ha... :slap: I further "complicated" the situation because I told my younger brother about the Russian SKS's arriving in country... And he asked me to pick one up for him and hold onto it till he gets back from New Zealand... So, I got 2 handpicked refurbished laminated ones from MilArm...

My 2 from the MilArm order showed up, VERY NICE... All matching #...

My 1 from the Frontier order showed up several days later, VERY NICE... All matching, with an arctic birch stock...

Now, I believe my SIR order will show up, I'm just not holding my breath for it... The "boss", aka Huntress, has given me "permission" (just kidding guys) to hold onto 2 of them, but once my brother has chosen his rifle from the other 2, rifle #4 will be on the chopping block... So, I'll be down to 2 Russian SKS rifles...

To me these SKSs represented a very affordable, fun little rifle.
The quality of these rifles frankly surprised me.
As seen by some of the photos posted, a lot of them look real nice.

I also enjoy the anticipation and interest when opening that mail-order box.
What did I get, good or bad? It's a gamble.
Brings back that kid at Christmas feeling I lost many many years ago.

Plus, 10,000 posts about them are pretty contagious.
I found it impossible to stay out of the game.

for me its strictely two things, 1. got to be military semi and 2. economical , inexpensive ammo and rifles.

besides SKS is never boring , lots of variants.
