SKS firing pin snap?!?

Umm...OK so I pulled my Trade-ex Russian SKS out of the safe (had it for less than 2 months) and cycled it a couple of times because thats an excellent way to end the work week right? Wrong.

I heard something small land on the ground near my feet - on inspection this is what I found.

I didn't know what the part was, or if it even came off the SKS but it did look familular - after disassembly I believe what happened is that a peice from the back side of the firing pin just snapped off. You tell me...I only have 1 sks so I cant compare.

I have never heard of anything like this happening from cycling an sks or any semi-auto bolt before. Thoughts?

Where can i get another 1950 sks spring firing pin? Should I ask Trade-ex if they will fix it for me?
 
Or you can get Murray's SKS firing pin (Also from the USA).

Some people like them, so people don't. I haven't had my SKS long enough to figure out if I need a spring return firing pin.

Confirms that this peice is off the end of my firing pin. (1950)

I guess my concern is 1.) why/ how this happened and of course 2.) the best place to replace the firing pin (preferably for cheap as this is a "cheap" although I thought pretty solid gun).

Looks like the Murrays is like 40$ to ship out here - that is way more than I want to spend.
 
I too have a 1950 Russian SKS and you indeed have had the back of your spring loaded firing pin snap off. How that happened cycling it I don't know. Well my theory is it was already about to go and happened to fall out then. At least it wasn't at the range just as you set up for a fun day of shooting. IIRC the stickies at the top here are great for identifying all parts. Our 1950's are a little bit of an odd duck being non-chrome lined and having spring loaded firing pins with those being the more obvious differences with multitudes of smaller differences.

Look for section J. You should note that our carrier, bolt and firing pin are not interchangeable with later bits. It appears Murray does make a firing pin that can indeed fit a '50 with a different spring.

I sent trade-ex an email - they did not get back to me today so hopefully I will hear from them on Monday. Fingers crossed they either cover it or have parts in stock.

39$ is the price for murrays and 35$ (+shipping?) from sksman. I have been unable to find a canadian dealer so far with something I can use.

I bought mine from Murray's, it was 39$, shipping is 2$.

Try leverarms.com...they are canadian and carry all you need for fixing an SKS...triggergroups,mags,pins...and the obvious aftermarket stuff.
 
I have a sneaky feeling that tradex will look after you, if you only had the gun for a few months. Get their take on it first then look elsewhere, if they can't resolve the problem.
Again if you only owned it for a few months, and didn't shoot off thousands of rounds, it had to have been over stressed before you bought it.

I think its been a month and a half - only seen 100 rounds so far!

Coachgun, I see lever has freefloat pins listed on their site; those wont work in my bolt but perhaps if need be I can call and ask.

Your pin is totally different being the original early design. I don't know if anything but an original '49- '50 design pin will work. Youll have to ask if Murrays will work in your setup ( I see they do) oops
 
murray firing pins will also work in early russian SKS but it needs a shorter spring which murray provides .
 
Well an update on my broken firing pin - Tradex really came through! They did not have 1950 pins in stock so they took one out of one of their other rifles and sent it to me free of charge.

I would highly recomend these guys - they take care of you even on surplus guns.
