So getting back in to shooting now that I have more time on my hands. Thinking about what trying 3 gun would be like. Ok, I saw the Keanu Reeves video and it got my blood pumping! haha!

I really wouldn't be trying to be super competitive but it looks like a blast to run it.
What I have:
CZ 75 SP-01 9mm - 5 mags/2 double mag holders
Mossberg 500 12 gauge 18 inch bbl, pistol or standard stock.

No tactical rifle. (Not sure what you folks in 3 gun call it, so going with that till I am corrected)

If I picked up a SKS, and maybe a tactical stock for it, would this gear set up work?

thanks

Dan

Heres what I ran at my first and only 3 gun match...... I placed halfway up the list in the unlimited division. Which is not bad considering i think everybody else was running AR-15's (most of which using 10rnd LAR mags). Although it will never be as good as an AR-15, or most AR alternatives... the SKS can still be modified into a fairly respectable platform for at least beginner competitions. Plus what I mainly discovered after the competition is the amount of practice you have behind your gear is more important than what gear you have anyways....

The guy who has a $2000 semi auto shotgun who is constantly fumbling his reloads isnt going to do any better than the well practiced guy with his Mossy 500.

The 3-9x24 scope seen in the picture sucked for the CQ shooting. I had a PKA red dot that I was going to use for the competition, but I failed to have it mounted in time so I had no choice but to use the 3-9 haha, wont make that mistake again.

SKS VS AR-15 wise :

The biggest short coming I noticed with my SKS was controlling the muzzle jump during rapid fire. The skilled AR-15 guys were like PAPAPAPAPAP, and I was like PAP PAP PAP....
I need to source out a better muzzle brake, or maybe just practice ALOT more.

As long as you don't want to be competitive go for it. One club I belong to has a few members that run SKS's from time to time. Only thing they have done is cut down their stripper clips so the only hold 5 rounds and hold them securely.

I normally run an AR, but I bought a SKS recently that I plan to for a club match. I kept the original stock and upgraded to Tapco 5/30 mags. I modified the bolt so that I can insert and remove magazines on a closed bolt.

Wow. Your SKS looks awesome Warren.

Is it possible to get a 'tactical rifle' for 3 gun in the $500 range? Or is that likely to look like 'buy a SKS if that is your budget?' I was planning on picking up a case of that military grade ammo, so that might be an issue that was mentioned if clubs won't allow it.

Would be nice to be able to use one of those 9mm shooting rifles as I reload 9mm for my CZ. Are those a possibility? Not sure if they can be bought in that price range. I guess I really just need a 101 course on Budget 3 gun.

Damn that SKS of yours looks awesome though Warren... How much did it cost to get it to that state? How much modification did you have to personally do? How come you can't use a 10 shot mag but AR guys can?

A "tactical stock" won't make the SKS any better at all for 3 gun. A pistol mag adaptor like what Hical.ca sells would be the best mod for 3 gun if you just had to run an SKS.

If you just want to give it a try before spending money on equipment make contact with someone at the match and arrange to borrow a rifle for the day. I guarantee there will be offers to lend you a rifle.

How competitive you want to be will drive your rifle choice. Just want to come out and have a fun day? A stock SKS is fine for that.

you can get a entry level AR for the price it would cost to setup an SKS and be more competitive then the SKS would be.
Norinco ARs can be had for cheap used, even entry level us made ARs can be had for $6-700 on the ee these days.
check with whatever club you plan to shoot at to see what rules they run. if they don't allow steel core ammo then in the long run the SKS will be more expensive to run as well.
the club may also allow you to run or have a division for pistol caliber rifles.

Here are the issues I can see that would make it a lot tougher with an SKS than an AR platform:

1) Limited to 5 rounds per load vs 10 or 15 with an AR. (I don't agree with the stripper clip vs magazine swap difference. Either way can be equally as fast if you are skilled enough at it, maybe stripper clips take more time to learn and master but once you do...)

2) Louder and more muzzle jump and stronger recoil with the SKS, making rapid fire on target more difficult

3) HEAVIER unless you modify the heck out of the SKS, it's going to be a lot heavier, which can make a difference for a lot of people

After that, it comes down to "which one can you shoot better". With the same amount of practice on both rifle types, most people will shoot better with an AR but if you have tons of practice with an SKS and none or little with an AR, well, it would take you a lot of time to catch up on the AR to your SKS skill.

Thanks so much folks. I think once again I've asked the wrong question, but have been steered to the right question from the responses.

I think my second question of 'can I get a tactical rifle in the budget range of $500' seems to be the right one. started perusing the EE on military rifles and have already seen a couple that come very close!

Hate to go all fan boi, but you guys rock. Appreciate the patient assistance while this old guy gets back in the game as it were!

Sure get a norinco ar they sell for around 5-6 on here. But yea your looking at at least 800 ish with magazines. Might be best looking for someone selling a package deal with mags.

Or pony up for the s&w sport. It is the cheapest of ar's. And it's all within spec. Norc's are good, but if you start to modify triggers, stocks, hand guards, etc, a norc might be out of spec. A s&w will not.

Heyy armycat.. was that mod fairly easy to do? I seen that mod on youtube, & have an SKS in mind to try it out on. How did you do it? Did you use a dremel? Thnx

Yes it was fairly easy. I used a dremel with a small grinding wheel on it. Patience is the key. It takes quite a while and I took several breaks to allow the bolt to cool. It can get fairly warm. I have no idea how what too hot is so I was fairly cautious.

Where will you be shooting 3 gun? Check with you local club to confirm if they allow surplus ammo and also check if they have a Rimfire division or what their maximum range is, you may be able to use a 9mm carbine.

The adapter is a piece of junk IMO plus it makes your sks cost 500 then you still need magazines and mine was a hard sell. Whatever you do don't waste your time and money. Biggest disappointment and waste of money I've spent so far on a rifle. It also didn't function right and the mags only allow 9 rounds unless you tinker with them. The mags are always out of stock and there Around $45 per magazine. Run away far far away
