SKS for 3 gun competition?

One of the reasons I'm hoping a pistol that uses AK mags show up here. IRG was trying to get the mutant in with 10rd pistol mags, but the RCMP had other plans. Another "pistol" is supposedly in the works, but no word yet. AK mag conversion looks like the better option, but imo, there's no point unless we can get 10rd mags.

Other then a dedicated optic is easier to have on a detachable mag rifle but yea. The sks d doesn't have a bolt hold open on most mags.

I competed with a fellow who ran an SKS.

He had cut the stripper clips down to hold 6-7 rounds and then loaded them with 5. The excess space on the strip was threaded into a plastic tube just wide enough for the stripper clip to be inserted and held there. He had about 4"-5" of tube to work with.

The result was that once he ran dry, he would simply grab the top of a tube from his pouch and pull it out with the accompanying stripper clip still inserted. He would then place the stripper clip in the guide and then use the tube to push down on the rounds, thus increasing his speed and leverage on the rounds going into the magazine.

He was VERY competitive with the reload times (LAR mags were not allowed at this particular match); the rest was up to his accuracy of course.

Wow. Your SKS looks awesome Warren.

Is it possible to get a 'tactical rifle' for 3 gun in the $500 range? Or is that likely to look like 'buy a SKS if that is your budget?' I was planning on picking up a case of that military grade ammo, so that might be an issue that was mentioned if clubs won't allow it.

Would be nice to be able to use one of those 9mm shooting rifles as I reload 9mm for my CZ. Are those a possibility? Not sure if they can be bought in that price range. I guess I really just need a 101 course on Budget 3 gun.

Damn that SKS of yours looks awesome though Warren... How much did it cost to get it to that state? How much modification did you have to personally do? How come you can't use a 10 shot mag but AR guys can?

If all u have for ammo is steel core corrosive...I agree with the others. You would probably be better off just buying a used AR.....

I only decided to use my SKS just because it's different, and I want to see just how competitive I can get with it.

The way it sits right now, it's around $750 ish including the gun. Thats also including the $400 Russian scope, which you pay quite a premium for.

The barrel is threaded for AK brakes
I took all the excess steel off the end
Did a trigger job
Installed the Sevensixtwo system mag realease
Modified the bolt
And run tapco mags

I can reload a mag in this gun in under 3second's... But unfortunately they are only 5 rnd mags, I couldve gone with the XCR pistol mags, but it would ruin the epic Russian look of the gun.

My fastest reload time with an ar, from last shot to first shot is 2.5, avg is around 3 seconds. If you can do that, then go SKS. But otherwise, by the time you spend money you're at what a decent ar would be, around $900

I normally run an AR, but I bought a SKS recently that I plan to for a club match. I kept the original stock and upgraded to Tapco 5/30 mags. I modified the bolt so that I can insert and remove magazines on a closed bolt.

Forgot to mention, to use Tapco mags with the original stock I had to sand the mag well a bit. The mag well narrows part way it. I haven't tried using the original fixed magazine so I don't know if the looser fit with have any impact.

So after this discussion, I bought a Norinco CQA 5.56. I am skilled at neither the AR or SKS, starting from scratch it sounds like AR is the best way to go. Total respect to the SKS folks, but I think I will take the road paved vs. the road less travelled. Looking forward to gaining skill with a tactical rifle. Who knows, maybe some day I'll want to try the SKS just for the flavor of it!
Thanks again for all the input guys.

Good choice you won't be disappointed. You will also find that easier to flip these days it's a hard sell to get your money back for an sks. Seems like everyone has one and wants them for sub 200. That and your Ar is going to run great with 0.0 mods yet you can if you want. That and your mags are good for other rifles like the xcr, acr, Tavor, keltec, rob arms m96, m-17 ect and so forth. So room to grow and expand. Good luck post some action vids later :)

I'm going at a 3 gun match on a military base in Quebec and I'm planning to bring my Norinco CQA. I'm a huge fan of SKS's, I have 4 and I have a CZ 858. I'm gonna use my AR because of magazine restrictions. 5 rounds suck... I have 2 beowulf mags that hold 16 rounds, hopefully they'll let me use them, it will be my first 3 gun ever.
