SKS for hunting

This along with, Bear defense gun, are the two most popular threads on here, and i think it is about 50/50 on the 7.62x39 for deer. My thoughts are that it will work with right bullets and good shot placement, however it is less power then the 30/30 which most people consider the minimum for big game. I favor anything bigger because I don't like to wound any animal if possible and think that should be part of the equation. Here we are talking about close range shooting and i can think of far better reformers starting with the .44 Mag.

This has been debated repeatedly and 7.62x39 is a workable round for deer, but not the military surplus rounds. Get the proper hunting rounds in 7.62x39mm (made by wolf, etc) (heavier, lead jacketed, not steel-core).

Personally the 7.62x39 is fine for deer with good ammo its the rifles they usually come in that I'd wonder about. My SKS and my dads SKS are great fun but I wouldn't trust them hunting they just are not accurate enough for me to hunt with. Lots of guys seem to use them with success though...

but is the blade or the spike better?

Spike. But you have to make sure it penetrates into the tree behind the deer in order to hold him still while you beat him to death with the cleaning kit.

SKS will kill deer dead if you hit them right and so will a well thrown chisel. Work within the limitations of the round and even .22 short is an effective deer killer -- if an illegal one.

CZ built an excellent quality little bolt action rifle chambered for the 7.62x39 Cartridge. I think it's the same rifle Norinco tried to knock off. Also many of the mini Mauser rifles are chambered for it as well. The Remington 799 comes to mind. These are true sporting rifles in every sense of the word, especially that CZ. The rifles most commonly associated with the cartridge; the SKS, AK-47 and similar rifles are also capable of hunting use, they just don't seem politically correct. And to be honest I've never fired one of the sporting rifles, so I can't compare accuracy of the two, however I'm certain they will perform better than any SKS I've fired, and be at least on par with the only VZ-858 I have shot. I saw another of the latter in use last weekend on gophers that delivered the accuracy that would have made it fine for big game hunting. The thing is, if I had unlimited amounts of money, I would buy one in a bolt action just to have. But since I don't, and if I were interested in another purchase, I as well as I believe most others would select a little more versitile cartridge. But if all someone has is an SKS, (And I'm sorry if that's the case :p) by all means go shoot a deer.

this comes up often. It showes concern to ask. The answer is alway "use enough gun!" If it is marginal go bigger. SKS are fun but if the cost is the prob. a 303 or stevens 200 etc. is still a better pick. This is just my.02 AJ

I work with guy's that have been hunting with thier sks for years and using them on Black Bears and deer with great success. IMO bullet placement is everything not the size or speed but Iam no expert

just want something cheap and be able to hunt deer or wild hogs with. at $139 from marstar...hell you cant beat that. i just looked up the 7.62x39 on wiki and apparently its good.

You should be fine with your SKS provided you use good quality hunting ammunition and are skilled enough to put the bullets where you want them. Practice makes perfect, so don't cheap out at the range. You might also want to consider a self-imposed range limitation on yourself when hunting (say 100 yards) until you have more actual hunting experience with this rifle on the game you are going after.

try one out. see how accurate they are. Shoot some wet paper in a box at say 50 yds & look at penitration. Compared to a 303 not near as good. Check the reloading tables. It is made for thin skin easy to stop critters. still just mho AJ

If your looking for a cheap deer rifle, and you haven't purchased an SKS yet, I'd say go for a Lee Enfield. If you already have an SKS, and wondering if you can hunt with it, it's really up to you. If you think you can place the bullet where you want, and your not doing it at great range, you should be ok. What province will this be used in?

DON'T Go read wikipedia and think everything is great though. That's just wrong. And I think marstar is out of stock.

The round is fine although I load my own as its not a legal factory round for deer here. I have the CZ527 and will possibly be developing a load for the 150 grain bullet as the 125 is marginal beyond 100 yards.
This is from experience as I use mine on Roe which are a small deer in our woodlands. I'm not happy using the 125 grain bullet in case I need to take a deer further out as its energy drops off dramatically, I will however use the same bullet in a .303 to good effects.
One of my clients cant hold a full sized rifle in the aim for long so needs a carbine weight. I initially put him off the M43 chambering but CZ dont make a carbine in .308 so we are stuck with it. He will have to load his own eventually, buying from me in the meantime.
It also means he will have to get it screw cut as that isnt a factory option and he needs a moderator fitted as his work is protecting orchards which only cover about 40 acres.
