SKS for hunting

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if 7.62 x 39 is good to take critters like me down (over 100 million "served" and another 100 million "happy" customers) , it's probably good for other medium sized game. Bullet placement is ALWAYS important, unless you hunt with an rpg. Close only counts in horseshoes and nuclear war.

Painbringer_ if u want a rifle in that price I'll sell u a 303 sporter for $140 + shipping. Your choise of 3. I just think you can do better than a SKS. (I have 2 SKSs that the boys & I shoot for fun) AJ

I have put 3000 rounds through my Yugo SKS. As far as accuracy is concerned I can say with absolute confidence that any dear inside 100 yards would be hit right were the sights are pointing. I know a guy that used 123g Winchester power points to shoot some deer. Compleat passthroughs.

Spike. But you have to make sure it penetrates into the tree behind the deer in order to hold him still while you beat him to death with the cleaning kit.

SKS will kill deer dead if you hit them right and so will a well thrown chisel. Work within the limitations of the round and even .22 short is an effective deer killer -- if an illegal one.

That's tellin' it like it is............:D

I have 3 rifles chambered in this round,a cz 858,cz52/57 and a Chinese sks. The two cz's I would hunt deer with tomorow.not saying sks's are bad, just the Chinese one's. It's a peice of crap.I'd stay clear of these. S.I.R is selling the russian sks for $170.Just my opinion. Keep you ear to the ground there's lots of good deals out there. Just picked up rem 740 in 30-06 for $125 it's a desent shooter. there's still tons of surplus enfield's,mausers out around under $150. If all else fales an old shotgun and some slugs will get you 50-70 yards with some practice. Just depends how bad you want to hunt. Happy shopping!

It's lots of short shots here, thick woods a lot of the times and if you move quiet you're apt to see him before he sees you at pretty close. I can't see an SKS and good hunting ammo having ANY problems killing deer if you put one through it's chest.

I think the biggest problem is how far out you can get it done with the irons (assuming we are not talkin anything ridiculous here) but then again, when ain't it?

All the other guys here said not there first choice either, and I gotta echo them. Even as far as mil surps go, and that's not so much a knock against the SKS as I prefer the irons on Garands, 14s, and other aperture style sights more.

Again tho, I shoot 90% of my deer inside 100 meters and 50% of those at 50m or less.

My buddy uses his SKS on occasion mostly when going through bush where scope may be more of a Liability than an asset.
