SKS for hunting?

The cartridge is designed to kill human sized targets within a 300 meter envelope of lethality and accuracy with the Iron sights...that's kill not wound.

So in the hands of someone that has taken the time to learn how to shoot an SKS properly 100 meters on a deer should be no problem.

For myself I'd even consider 200 meters on open ground, but I have put in a lot of time with my SKS at the range.

I hear ya Calum,

I read about 300 yards deer kills with the SKS but still I wonder.

According to the ballistic charts I'm looking at, the SKS hits with 882 ft/lbs and the .30.30 at 858 ft/lbs both at 200yds.

No one will argue that the .30.30 does its best work inside 125 yards (some say 100) and is not a "go to gun" for longer shots. Seems to me the ballistics say the same thing about the SKS.

Practise make all the difference at long ranges. We all know that.

Not stirring #### here, just trying to grasp why the SKS holds such a candle for long shots when there are so many other choices.

I dunno.

Call my uninformed or bias or whatever, but I cannot believe the SKS / 7.62x39 would make a first choice moose gun / round.

I just can't wrap my mind around that having shot both.

Moose are big with thick skin, big bones, large muscles often in tough country. I'd want a little more umph to make sure I'm not chasing blood trails all night.

Has anyone here actually taken a moose with a SKS / 7.62x39?

sks are broken into a couple common makers, romanian, chinese and the odd russian with some others i cant remember. it seems that the chinese ones vary a lot in quality depending on the factory and the batch. the romainian ones are generaly better made.

however without proper maintanence eventualy you might not hit the broadside of a barn while in the barn!:(

so id say it depends on the gun, you can probably acurize it some with a competent smith.
that said if you aim at the bullseye with you sks and hit the squirrel munching his nutz 20 feet to the left..... not a whole not you can do lol!

anyhoo thats my opinion take it or leave it

I've taken a big cow moose with my norinco two years ago and only went 15 yards away and fell dead as a doorknob.

A few years ago I played around with an SKS and tried some handloads for it. This is a 8 shot group at 200 yards.

ry%3D400

The group measures about 5" x3"

I think that is good enough to kill a deer...;)

I always take an SKS with me moose hunting as a backup gun, ammo is Wolf 154gr SP.All my SKS's shoot accurate enough to hunt with.On an adult moose I would keep shots within 100yards and maybe 150 for a calf. I also take lots of FMJ to for playday in the bush.

Wow, that's a nice group @ 200 yards. I wonder if the rounds would have enough energy to penetrate and do enough damage for a clean kill.

About moose being thick skinned and muscular...no animal on this planet wears armor except humans :D

Cheers!

you know, there is less difference between the 270WCF and the 7mm RM than there is between the 7.62x39 and the 30WCF.
