SKS For hunting

Mine came from The Shooting Edge in Calgary. It was under $200.00, same with ammo. The ATI FiberForce stock, NcSTar receiver mount, Browning Reflex sight and Tapco pinned mag came from Fly's Etc. in High River.

Although, I won't lay claims to 200 yd gophers with open sights (I couldn't do that with the best of equipment), it will connect with them at 75-100 yds with open sights consistently. So in terms of SKS's, that's pretty good.

Are they fun? Well, I never intend to hunt big game with it, there's far better equipment for that, but coyotes and gophers on a windy day, nothing more fun.

You got that right gitrdone.
Anyone who wants to use an sks for hunting big game is gun nutz. Theres way better, and more accurate rifles for what I put my vacation time in for.

I dont want disapointment and neither does the game.:D

Why, you can't track deer with out a blood trail? This is not rocket science, natives did it for years. Find a decent track in new snow and follow it. The first time you bust the deer, it will scare the living bejeebers out of you. Just keep following it, it will make a circle (a big one albeit) so keep track of what you pass through so that you can backtrack if you need to. Lots of times you will push him out of an area and you just "know" he's going to go back to that thicket or draw. That's when you have to run back and beat him there. And you will. Then when you bust him the 4th time or so, he will be fed up and pissed off and just stand there challenging you.
 
x2:agree: I've done this too many times to count, taught my kids how to use this tactic as well. As long as a deer is "spooked" up it's always worked....like EVERYTIME! Find fresh tracks/fresh sh1t and follow it. 7 out of 10 times you'll find the deer and spook him from cover, he'll take off. Stop find cover for yourself and turn in the opposite direction and wait quietly....the next part is kinda weird,but I swear you can almost set a watch to it.....15-25min. and the same deer will have circled around and back to where he was spooked from......only this time your ready for him!:D
 
X3...a light snowfall is a beautiful thing, and when you follow and spook a deer it'll do a circle and come back around, provided it doesn't scent you...so be aware of the wind direction and move off a bit if necessary.
