Hi guys,
Just wondering what everyone thinks about using an sks for hunting moose. I will be hunting with my father in law who has a .308, so he would be taking any long range shots. If I was to take a shot it would be within about 100 yards or so. I'm concerned that 7.62x39 might be a little underpowered. I will either have to use the sks or a 12 gauge with slugs. What is better?

Hmm at first I was about to throw red flags all over the place, but a well placed 7.62x39 shot under 100m would probably do it. Just make sure you use your quick iron sites and semi-auto ability to its fullest in this situation because a follow up shot or even third may be quite a possibility.

Ps. Use non-corrosive prvi partizan ammo or anything else other than the mil surplus for hunting.

The SKS will do the trick inside 100 yards if placed in the lungs - as would just about anything - but there are always better tools for this job.

depends what your more comfortable. I know a guy from Ontario that uses a 12g with slugs every year and he shot a nice bull in NFLD last year as well. 7.62x39 with a good bullet would be enough I would think if you can hit the vitals with it.

i wouldnt suggest using a sks on a moose its quite under powered and under sized and depending on gun maybe not tht accurate. but then again a 12 gauge isnt the best ether at any great range.

I have an sks and a shotgun, and i'd take the shotgun if i was going for moose. MY mossberg 500 puts rifled slugs on a 8 inch circle at 100 yards, plenty good for moose. The sks does a little better than that, but i'd rather have a 1oz slug than a 123gr bullet hitting my monster moose at ANY distance.

A shotgun with a rifled barrel and a sabot is quick accurate and deadly at 150+ yards. Even a smooth bore shotgun with a rifled slug can be shot at a fiar distance as well

Take a premium slug like a Remmy Corelokt Ultra or Winchester Partition 12g, 385grain, their numbers speak for themselves. 3000+ ft/pds muzzle, 2300ft/pds at 100 yards and 50 cal to boot. If thats not enough or better than a 7.62x39 out to 100yds with and accurate shooting shotgun than I don't know what is? :D

oh ya my mossy 535 with the rifled barrel and brenice slugs 200 yards on a moose no problem .every deer i ever hit in the ribs has been a pass thru shot 12 g slug pack a hell of a punch DUTCH
