SKS works great but this happenes... Its difficult to push in by hand so I need to drop the bolt. I cant even pop off the gas tube when like this. Tried several ammo types.

Time for a full strip down and cleaning. The spring on the gas piston is usually a coiled menace, so for it to allow the piston to jam into the receiver like that it's probably shot.

It's not the ammo, at least not anymore. You'll probably need to replace the extension spring and possibly the extension piston (aka piston transfer, secondary piston, or op-rod).

IIRC, there is a fairly recent (last 12 months) discussion of this topic in the troubleshooting sub-forum over on sksboards.com.

You are very lucky you can still push the OP rod back in. Once it seizes, it can be H.E.-hockey-sticks to dislodge.

Good luck

I have the same issue. Cleaned it well and checked everything. No broken spring or parts. BUT....
This issue remains till today so I just continue to shoot it as is since it cycles as good as my other sks.

I've had my 51 Tula for over 5 years and never had this problem. My t-fer piston hardly gets dirty after a 100 rnd session of Rus/Rom/Chicom milsurp. I'd vote for a wornout spring if you say its not broken.
