sks in QCB

very cool. actually inspires me. i think ill hve to get out there with my sks. (WELL NOT OUT TO ONTARIO BUT TO A TAC RIFLE OR CQB MATCH!)

At short ranges the inadequecies of the SKS don't show up, it is a slick fast handling carbine. During a couple of World War 2 re-enactor matches that I have used mine in, I have found that trimming down the length of the stripper clip is the best mod that you can do. I generally cut it down to 5 rds, crimp one end, de-burr it on the bench grinder and paint the crimped end orange. This way under the stress of match conditions you can always ensure you know which end of the clip is going in the rifle. The M1 Garand Cartridge belt holds 20 clips which are very easy to access.

That video really impressed me on this rifle. How does the SKS compare to a Marlin 336 in 30-30 with a 6 round capacity?

I have used the SKS in CQB with stripper clips. Some things to consider:

Make sure the mag block will allow the mag to load 5 1/2 rounds. You don't want any resistance getting that last round off the clip.

I left my clips at full length and loaded 5 on each. I made sure the round was not so close to the end that it would fall off in handling.

I took some clips and ran a round back and forth in the clip, with a little mild abrasive to polish it up a bit, then cleaned and lubed them. Rounds strip off as slick as snot.

I put all the ammo in a pouch hanging front right on my belt. This made it fast to reach.

Although the SKS can be reloaded quickly, it can only be loaded when empty. The AR and 858 can be reloaded when empty or after 4 shots (one left in chamber). As the match progresses, this option can be critically important from a timing point of view.

Honestly, that's why I love the cz-858/ vz-58. Best of both worlds. Decent accuracy, hard hitting caliber, mag or stripper fed, great reliability. I agree with the comment that it's the man behind the trigger, not the trigger. Talk to some of the independant operators here. Some were given some pretty shakey looking Ak's and such by their employers, and they seem to make them work, after all, they still post here.

An sks loads faster, cycles faster, it is semi automatic, is heavier, and more reliable it is also much cheaper to purchase and to shoot (with surplus). Loads5 rounds at a time on strippers.

A 336 will be a bit more accurate, have a nicer trigger, will be lighter and is much easier to put an optic on. 30-30 is a bit more powerful cartridge than the 7.62x39.
