I took a relatively "new to me" sks out today, and I got about 5 jams out of 45 rounds fired. Each time the bullet tip wedged itself under the barrel and the force of the bolt closing drove the bullet into the case as you can see in the pics below. The bullet on the left is a normal one for comparison. It did this with 3 different types of ammo too.

Anyone got an idea what's going on here? What's causing this thing to jam?

Looks like it is not feeding from the mag into the chamber properly, with the bullet hitting the lip of the chamber & pushing the projectile into the case.

Do you have another SKS you can swap mags with? Betcha the problem goes away...

Cheers

I do have a spare mag I can try in it.

My money is one the follower pivot point being stiff due to a tight pin job--if it's internally pinned.

OP, if that is the case, simply detach the magazine and work the follower while watching a hockey game, or some other TV program. Mine loosened up and no longer causes jams.

I think I figured it out. The inner magazine is loose, I can wiggle it up and down, so I think it drops down and causes the feed lips to sit about 1/16"- 3/32" below where it should be.

I've seen burrs on the lips of some sks mags that catch and jam a scattered round. I took a fine file to it and made it smooth, solved the problem immediately.

It can only be issues with the mag or the feed ramp. Only 2 things that would cause what's happening. If another mag doesn't solve it check the feed ramp for inconsistencies, burrs , imperfections etc.

I had the same issue with my SKS pinned the same way. Always happened with the last round. The limiting pin did not have enough machined out of it to allow the follower to rotate enough. I used a file to take the edge off the one side to allow it to rotate a little further. Never jammed since.
