Hey guys I'm new to the website, it's totally awesome. I have been bitten by the SKS bug. I was wondering if you can purchase a kit to make an SKS into and SKS D (the one that takes AK mags right?) I have searched the internet and found references to such a thing but have not been able to find a supplier. Any help would be appreciated.

I do not think you can make a D out of a normal SKS, however go on u-tube theres plenty of videos on how to make the wood stock accept tapco 5/20 mags.

Welcome to the site 22. For normal fun in the sun plinking, there is nothing wrong with using stipper clips for loading. It don't take much longer than changing a mag.

I have a D-Box & love it. But I also have had fixed mags for many years & love those as well.

But truth be told, as alta780 says, those stripper clips are awesome. I can load my fixed mag SKS every bit as fast, if not faster, than my D-Box. You can have a whole pile of stripper clips there beside you & shoot all day. The D-Box doesn't lock the bolt open & does not accept stripper clips so you have to stop & reload your mags when you run out. Not a big deal, but it is faster to drop the cartridges onto a stripper clip.

AK mags are also (usually) expensive and getting hard to find. Stripper clips are not.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks for the thoughts guys, BTW what's the deal with corrosive vs non corrosive 7.62x39 ? I cna see the difference in price. IS there any harm in using the corosive if you clean the gun right away? The more I plink with this thing the more impressed I am with Russian engineering!

not to highjack your thread...but what exactly defines cleaning the sks??/ like a complete breakdown..cleaning everything??? Something tells me running the bore snake through wont be enough???
Thanks in advance..and sorry to highjack .22short

Some people made a religion out of it and clean it with hot water after shooting....a russian weapons korporal would kick you in the butt for doing so:D

Seriously, after every shooting day 2x boresnake, some WD40 and the gastube and piston cleaned is enough...maybe the pre 52 need some more attention because their barrel is not chrome lined like 52 and up or all chinese SKS.
Full takedown and clean I'd recommend all 500 rds,so you won't have to deal with a dirt-stuck firing pin and slamfire.

Yup. I rarely take mine completely apart, unless it's been out in the rain and/or collecting hemlock needles from being dragged around the brush. I will remove the receiver cover & pop the bolt every few hundred rounds, if it's going to sit. As stated, barrel, chamber & gas tube/piston are the main concern.
