Does anyone know what type of finish the Russian SKS's use on the stock? Is it the orange shellac or something totally different?
Thanks
My 1951 refurbed Tula had a shellac finish. The first time out with it this spring, my bug juice made it sticky. So... I removed it and applied two coats of varnish. Problem solved.

Louthepou has posted somewhere the proper colour and number, I think it was amber rather than orange, but don't quote me. A PM to him would no doubt get you the correct answer. Lee Valley Tools has shelac.
Personally I have been able to repair patches of missing shelac by just using a brush with alcohol to disolve some of the shelac around the missing bit and "stretch" it over the bad bit.
