Alright, I know it's not really a main battle rifle (it fires an intermediary round) and it certainly cannot be an assault rifle (small magazine, not fully automatic, lacks a pistol grip) so I just decided to post here. Does anyone know about the legality of the SKS in Canada? I mean, it can be loaded by 10 round clips and uses a 10 round mag, so it should be illegal; but then there's the M1 Garand. So what gives? :runaway:

All of the SKS' legally sold in canada have the magazine pinned to 5 rounds. It can still be fed by the strippers, its just kind of awkward as the 6th round usually falls off the 10 round stripper.I really don't understand the exeption that the Garand enjoys though

Two things: it's American, and it's very "historicy".

I have never used one but it think it would be very dificult to pin one to five rounds. They make five round clips for hunting but those are clips not magazines.

Oh yah,

Buy an SKS and a crate of ammo. Will be the best $350 bucks you ever spend.

I am not 100% on this but I think you can only load the Garand with 8 rounds at a time. You can't do a top up in the middle of firing. Something to do with the mechanics of it.

You have to empty all eight rounds and then you have to load exactly eight rounds.

You are correct on that.

sks may come with a fixed 10 round mag but its pinned to 5 rounds.

go get one if you dont have one , there are good prices for russian and chinese avail right now.

One of the dealers on here is getting primed to sell them at about 250~ (with tax). I hate to go above his head but most people are a bit too good at promoting their own product. Is the price right for a Russian SKS?

the price is great for a russian SKS pepole will go on a feeding frenzy if condition are very good to excellent. (it will since they are rebuild)

BTW you have a lot to read assult rifle, pistol grip high cap mag have nothing to do with it we buy AR-15 all day long and they have all the evil features

I didn't want to give the "it's a scary looking weapon" excuse that so many politicians do. I can tell you, if I saw an assault rifle, I could probably tell you what it was.

"...Something to do with the mechanics of it..." It's the design, not the mechanics. The M1 was made to shoot with the 8 round enbloc clip and nothing else. This was one of the major complaints. No 'topping up the mag'.
The 5 round clips are very much commercial things and were made to allow hunters to use the rifle where more than 8 rounds is illegal, Stateside. They run $5.50US each from Gunparts. You don't need 'em here unless your Provincial hunting regs says no more than 5 rounds in a rifle.
There are States that don't allow centrefire rifles for deer hunting, States that don't allow more than 5 rounds in the rifle for hunting anything and States that don't allow semi-autos period. Plus some that specifically prohibit some centrefire cartridges.
Your SKS is fine for close range deer sized game with a pinned mag and the right hunting ammo. Even though the sights are poor. Just remember a Warsaw Pact issued SKS will have a .311" diameter barrel. .308" bulleted ammo(most American made hunting ammo unless otherwise stated uses this diameter bullet) won't shoot well out of a .311" diameter barrel. It's the wrong bullet.
