i just bought a sks, and honestly know nothing about them, from the information that i have gleaned i have a Tula letter series (D) sks non refurb. is there anything special about these sks? cuz i was about to bubba the sh!t outta it

i just keep reading and reading, there is "electro pen" serial on the gas tube and butt plate and the magazine serial doesn't match the rest I'm taking this shifts me into the refurb side or is this a common way for the marking, and the magazines never match?
 
If you have non matching numbers and EP anywhere on the outside of the gun but the gas tube, it's a refurb. Also, look for a stamped square with a diagonal line or diamond with a "T" in the middle of it. Either of those indicate refurb as well.
 
Little blurry, is that a square with diagonal through it on the top dust cover? If not it looks non refurb or light refurb! Either way it looks real nice, another thing to keep an eye on is how much you put into you bubba rifle as there are a lot of them on the EE that are trying to get their investment back and generally they will lose money, if that doesn't bother you the go ahead! I would try and find a cheaper beater to rip apart, also you could try getting some cash out of the parts you take of off it! Good luck.

sorry for image quality its probably the worst time to take pics in my house.... its on the left side, below but inline with the rear sight, and its hard to make out in the pic, but its a rectangle in a square.
there is nothing on the dust cover at all
 
Very nice SKS! As Bob says, it looks like either a non-refurb or a light refurb. Too good to bubba! That stock is great and the metal is blued which
is hard to find now.
 
half of me is happy i got a nice SKS, but disappointed at the same time... just had to explain to my wife why i needed another one... she was okay with it after i explained it was like pimp my ride... "this sunfire is too nice to pimp, i need a shady looking one that has 4 different rims and a 3 foot tall hoop spoiler thats primed but not painted"

Wow good job on convincing, the diamond with diagonal by the x bolt are good, shows that the stock likely wasn't sanded in refurb, if there was one on the dust cover, that would indicate refurb! There are tons of variables but generally you have a very nice SKS, now go find the one with four different hubcaps!
Oh, does the other side of the stock have sny cartouche like a large C with a mark inside, usually on the opposite side from the serial#.
 
The only thing that doesn't look original is the bayo - I've always seen that year with a goldish tint. Other than the unfortunate mismatch on the mag that is an excellent gun. Please don't bubba!
If you do want to get your bubba on, as mentioned grab one off the EE that is mostly what you want. You'll save a ton of $ that way.
 
bayonets for the 1956+ SKS's are either matte silver or matte gold. Look at the punch marks on the bayonet screw end. Do they align or match-up? It may be a light refurb or a non-refurb with a mismatched mag.

Probably too nice to bubba. If OP doesn't want more than two SKS's, I suggest he sell his and buy the nice arsenal parkerized one on EE with the Williams sight and Tapco stock. It also comes with the original laminate stock. $300 is a good start to a nice bubba set-up.

yeah it looks like a C with like a capsule(pill) hard to explain... whats that mean?
