SKS live round stovepipe, crushing case?

Hi! My friend has an SKS, and every so often, when you are shooting, a live round gets stuck like a stovepipe, with the bullet pointing up at you. The case gets crushed, and you have to throw the round away. Any idea why this is happening? Thanks!:D
 
have a close look at the feed lips to see if they are bent or badly worn. I cant remember what the standard mag lips look like but an AK mag uses short feed lips to strip the round quickly, which can cause feeding issues at slower speed. After checking the lips, try feeding a round slowly and watch what it does, see if you can replicate the stovepipe to narrow down the problem. (do it safely though)
 
They look normal I guess. What about getting a TAPCO 20/5 rounder from Fabsports? Would that help do you think? Or where would you get a new fixed mag? Or repair it?
 
In that case the only other culprit I can think of may be the bullet guide. If its not obviously deformed then trying an aftermarket mag would be a good step.

The next time this concern happens check the lengh of the cartridge that stove piped to another cartridge, see if it is shorter. I had this concern with the last case of ammo I had. I am at the end of another case of ammo and have not had it happen again.
 
We were using czech ammo from lebarons, came in 10 round stripper clips, wrapped in plastic. The deformed round couldn't fit in the chamber. Also, what is the bullet guide? Are they $$$ to replace?
 
the bullet guide is the ramp infront of the magazine that guides the round up into the chamber, not replaceable. If its too steep it could be pushing the rounds up enough that they flip up when they clear the feed lips. Its alot less likely than the magazine itself. a dirty chamber wont affect rounds feeding, the problem is occuring before they get to the chamber.
 
  1. Check recoil spring to ensure that it is in properly.
  2. Check Op-Rod for a carbon build up or damaged return spring. Same with the extractor.
  3. Polish the chamber with JB Bore Bright after scrubing it with laquer thinner and a brass chamber brush.
Do these 3 thing's and post back if you still run into this situation.
