SKS losing accuracy with a Tapco Stock?

Well that turned out better than I had hoped. I just went off the pics that were posted, copied what had been done and it works perfect. I removed the firing pin and cycled a few mags in the backyard and every single round ejected to the right just like Aramir said. Next up will be a trigger job, then maybe mount a fullsize scope! And now for some pics :D

After some filing and sanding I touched it up with some fresh bluing and now its barely noticable

Thanks for posting these great mods Aramir, I much prefer doing this kind of stuff over bolt-on mods.

I did the mod on the ejection window on a Russian last night. At the range today the spent casings came straight out to the right with no flyers. I will not hesitate to put a full size scope on without worrying about strikes. Say goodbye to clip on deflectors. Thanks Aramir for posting that link to the Russian site. That site has a wealth of information on it that I have not seen on any english site.................

All and all, I wonder why the guys who design plastic stock don't make them the way the wooden stock is made - with the support pin and all. That shouldn't affect the production cost by that much.

The thing is - the SKS armory repair manual makes sort of a big deal of the issue that barrel should not touch the stock at any point after the metal support pin.

I just think - Simonov, probably, wasn't a stupid guy, right? There must be a good reason behind this type of mount. (Possibly, an attempt to make the barrel sort of "free floating").

Either that or they make it a little oversize to accomadate different dimensions from different manufacturers? If the pin ended up in the wrong spot, it would be hard to fix. But if that pin is bedded solidly, along with the rear of the reciever, can the barrel be free floated from the stock ferrule? So that just the reciever is in contact? After the recent mods to my SKS Ive been thinking about doing some more serious accurizing. Do you guys think it would be a good idea to bed the reciever and free float the barrel completely? My idea was to open up the barrel channel in the ferrule, then attach it to the stock. What do you guys think?

I've sent a PM to the guy who started 'SKS: Optics, sights & mounts' thread, telling him about the mod and asking him to update his thread.

i think you and supernova should post your findings in the sticky yourselves.

I have an old ATI folder, not that fancy one and yes it wiggles alot. I was thinking of shimming it but I think instead I will throw it in the old wood stock. I hope it gets more accurate, we'll see.

If i remeber I'll post up the results.

The butt stock is loose, not the action. It wiggles quite a bit. But Ive gone back to the wood stock, just looks so much better IMO
I should first off ask you if you removed to much from the trigger area that is needed to fit the differances from SkS tolerances. Now with that being said...
Take a look at the video during the 31 second mark. You will notice that that stock SkS stock will have a spring located under the trigger. Take out this spring and place it under the trigger on your tapco stock. By doing this it should correct your loose stock issue.
Also is there any damage located at the front of the recever cut out? You will notice a tight fight were the front locater lugs that should be at the front that should put rear ward presure to keep the action from jumping around.

sorry Satain, I think theres been some mis-communication here. No problem, I said earlier Ive got an ATI ultralight stock and that the spring does not fit the hole (too big) I would have drilled it out if I wanted it that bad but have since decided I like the factory wood best. I didnt remove any material but the rear of the action rises and falls a little bit. I built up a little epoxy infront of the reciever that holds the action tightly front to back. The play I was reffering to was the folding stock locking mech. allows the butt stock to swing side to side a little when locked in the open position. Ive got a folding 858 to take the place of the folding SKS, so I can scope the heavier/bulkier SKS, building it just how I want :D But yeah, the spring or a little bedding would be all thats needed to finish fitting the ATI stock
