How many of you out there have the stock mag and use stripper clips versus using a detachable mag. Never owned an SKS and want some feedback on what others have done to theirs.

Factory 100%. I personally think the detachable mags look goofy on the rifle, seems to ruin it's lines. Also, I've heard some reliability issues with the detachable mags

The Tapco mags run just fine, especially if you do a couple mods to them and/or to the rifle. The bolt needs to be ground in a couple places to accept the mags and to allow 'full' loaading'. The mags need a couple slight mods too, one to 'clear' the front of the mgs into the well; the second is to allow loading with a stripper clip. Here's a quick link to a thread on SKSBOARDS .COM that briefly describes these. You can find LOADS of SKS info there, for all flavours of SKSs.

As for other mods, one of the best is painting the rear sight White and the front post Red - it makes acquiring target much easier with the irons. There are mods to the trigger assy if you're mechanically inclined, too. I have a '51 Tula that I've got the trigger down to ca 3-4# and can hit under 2" at 50 yds. with the irons. That's OK for a 70+ year old surplus rifle that's been used 'harshly' b4 I got it.

I just posted then saw Dimp's post. NO reliability issues with my 6- Tapco mags ! And I have the Tapco 'Black Stock'. I've literally shot thousands of rounds with NO Issues (and haven't even opened them for cleaning). Most shooting has been with Chinese Milsurp, tho I've also run Romanian and Czech ammo until it became too hard to find.

I’ve ran the tapco mags with the sks wood stocks with no issues, sometimes you have to file a bit of plastic away on the mag so they fit better
I don’t do the bolt mod and recommend not doing it as it’s non reversible (obviously), and will ruin any collector value the rifle had
All I do is pull the bolt back and manually engage the bolt stop before inserting the mag the first time

Detachable mag mods on a SKS are more of a "because I CAN, or I PREFER the look" project rather then an notable improvement over the factory stripper clip setup.

When you put a scope on, you kind of get rid of stripper clips, unless you are using the cut out mount, which is fairly expensive (or drill and tap mount, not even talking about the mount which replaces the rear cover), then you need a scope which does not interfere with the feeding. I like the stripper clips myself. Perfect for a stock SKS.

An other '51 Tula SKS I had mounted a Recvr cover/rail with a scope. I had to mod the rail to allow the scope going back enough to clear the clip-loading. I sold that a few years ago but wish I'd kept the setup. The repl cover 'tongues' had to be precisely fitted but it Did not lose Z when R/R.

Are scopes useful for the SKS platform? Seems negligible in use to me other than "it's cool". But I guess a lot of things we do to the firearms are because it's cool lol. I could be wrong.

Some SKSs are inherently INaccurate but most can 'do better' with a scope. A lot depends on the application of the rifle and the installation of the scope. Some mounts are not very dependable. I was lucky with mine while many I've read about did not fare well. I had to file mine to fit the receiver (luckily was enough materiel to work with) and also 'bend the ears' to make a snug fit. Gotta have some 'Bubba genes' I guess.

run my sks with a lar15 adapter local gun store sells and installs. leave the mag in and load it with full sized stripper clips. works like a hot damn. keep a spare lar15 mag.... was going to be used in the ar i was building...

Price is insane.

Only issues ive had was when the mag wasnt seated right. If i just leave the mag in and load with full clips it runs great.

That pistol magazine conversion for the SKS is a joke in my opinion. The rifle accepts 10 rounds to begin with. I know all the arguments for the conversion but seriously, if an enforcement agency wants to check the legality of magazine limits used, you will have some explanation to do. This is different from the 10 round AR pistol magazine which is widely known. Just my 2 cents. Take it for what it is.

I have one SKS in full tapco with detachable mags and it runs fine. Some of the mags need a bit of filing/Dremel but then they are good.
I also have another un-bubbed SKS with original fixed mag and it also runs fine

What I wouldn't do is put a duckbill in the SKS and not have it detachable. Ive seen that before and it neve made sense to me?
