So, today I was out enjoying my SKS with some tannerite and some friends when suddenly it didn't feed properly for a couple of rounds. Weird. Cleared the problem and carried on despite not being characteristic of any SKS I have owned. Shortly thereafter I realized I could fit an entire stripper clip (10rds) into the rifle. Dropped the mag, and yep. The pin was laying in the bottom. Has that happened to anyone else? How can I legally remedy this without making it an eyesore? For the time being I have just swapped the mag out with one from one of my other SKS rifles so I can use it and stay within the law, but I want to keep everything with the rifle it belongs with, so I want to fix this. It almost looks like the post was tapped and threaded onto something on the follower? I can see two distinct metals on the bottom of broken off post. I have the means and ability to do it, I just want to know how it is usually done. Threaded seems like it may not be legal as it isn't "permanent"? Any suggestions?

Yup, better to be safe than sorry. Not worth thousands of dollars in legal fees for a few extra rounds. I am even beginning to hate it when the LEOs give me the stink eye at the range when I load up 15 rounds in my 96 magazine. Having said that, I do believe that some SKS's have a small hole drilled on the bottom of the mag and the post is welded from the bottom. Make sure the post is the right height because if you are stopped, they will ask you to load the magazine to capacity in front of them.

Please understand that you are not even close to being as intelligent as you think you are. I swapped the damaged mag out with an undamaged one from another SKS rifle. So yes, I can definitely use it and be well within the law. But thanks for coming out. You are what is wrong with this community.
Well, based off one of replies above, it has quickly become apparent that taking this magazine to an LGS will only see me encounter fudds with no real help to offer so I just carefully welded the post back onto the follower where it was. It is just a tiny, thin piece of metal so I was worried about warping it while going that route, but I didn't. The mag functions just fine still and it is again permanently limited to 5 rounds. Thanks to the people that came here for purposes other than to act superior in order to feed their sad little egos. Have a good day!

And thats what happens when the pin breaks. Mine broke a couple weeks ago. I'm at the bench talking to a buddy when subconsciously I put in the 6th rd and stop. WTF I thought, popped the mag and found the pin broken in the bottom. I showed the other guys at the range (4 of them) how easy it was to be a criminal in Canada. We laughed, I put the gun away and when I got home, popped a new rivet into it. Measured, cut, crimped and Bob's your uncle. Easy peasy
The guy is asking for help, and it's quite obvious that he's not saying he's going to load up an entire round magazine at the range. He's saying that the pin broke off and he COULD load 10 rounds. Why is this confusing? As he said, there seem to be too many people around here waiting to jump at the chance to display their own (imagined) moral/intellectual superiority. Lots of high horses around here.
Man... Some of you guys are out to lunch. He noticed the whole stripper clip went in, immediately noticed the defect, took the mag out of the gun and replaced it with a functioning one, and repaired the damaged mag.
What else was he supposed to do? Call 911?

This happens a lot with the follower pinned mags. People prefer them because they look better but it doesn't take much for them to break off.

Did you weld it on the top of the follower or from the underside? I'm only asking as I've had issues with the last round failing to feed on an sks when the pin sat I kunt hair higher than the follower, make sure the pin and weld is flush at the top. A tack weld on the bottom would be best and file the top of the pin flush.
I had this happen to me too. I just cut a 1" or so piece of 1/2" metal rod, put it under the follower and made sure it stopped it from going down further than needed for 5 rounds to be loaded. And lacking a welder i used 2 part epoxy to attach it to the bottom of the magazine under the follower. Problem solved. Shot over 1000 rounds through it since, the epoxy is holding fine.
A lot of people load ten rounds into a stripper clip, push 5 in, set the other 5 aside. I've done it myself a fair amount. Not once was I intending to load all 10 rounds.
So what would be your suggestion to someone whose magazine pin broke off and wants help to fix it then? Would you suggest he turn himself in to the police like the criminal he his?
