SKS Mag Question

I have a 1950 Russian SKS with a detachable mag.

I've removed the mag to replace with a Tapco 5-round mag and it appears to be junk. I knew I should have bought the steel mag instead, but the Tapco mag were available so I jumped in (I actually bought 2).

Question;

With the fixed mag out, do you have to "slap" the detachable mag in in order to get it to seat? The bolt remains closed with the mag out so I presume that pushing the mag in hard would force the mag released back enough to grab the edge of the detachable mag.

Some advice here would be very much appreciated as I'm having difficulty with the fitment and function of the detachable mag.

Question;

Do the 30-round steel mags actually fit well and do they lock into position nice and tight? Are the steel detachable mags better than the fixed mag, or should I just go back to the fixed mag?

Again, just looking for an opinion here and some advicefrom someone that has more experience than I.

DO NOT try and force the D-mag in when the bolt is closed.

Sorry Im not great with firearms terminology but there is a small latch at the rear of the mag well. Have no mag in, with one hand pull the bolt back and with the other puch this latch up, (you have to kind of sandwhich the rifle into your thigh so you have both hand available )release the bolt and the bolt will remain open without a mag in. Now you can slip that Tapco mag in without forcing anything.

The bolt will remain open and wont close with the empty mag in cause there is a lil "blocker" on the top of the mag. When the mag is charged that lil "blocker" goes down and you can release the bolt forward and load a round in to the barrel.

Note: I have both steel and Tapco mags for the SKS. I acutally prefer the Tapcos. just stay away from the plastic cobra 40/5 masg. they need a lot of tinkinering

The problem with aftermarket mag that dont get addressed often is that, if you want to easilly fit the mag, you must change the bolt. The regular bolt on an russian sks will not allow you to fit the mag when the bolt is closed, neither to remove it. this cause a quite dangerous situation to unload live ammo with an hand on the bolt to keep it open and another one in the opening. A new bolt that match sks-m/d specification for mag removal when closed is 85$.


As a side note, every after market item I added to my sks is crap so I wont be adding any more... (magazine, scope mount x2)
 
Pull the bolt back and push up the bolt stop to hold the bolt in the open position, only then insert the mag otherwise you will damage the lips. There are instructions to this effect that come with the tapco mags.

The 5/30 round steel mags that Ki11ercane sells are far superior to the plastic tapco mags.
 
maybe this is a dumb question-but WHY would anybody want a 20 or 30 rd mag which has to be pinned to 5 anyway?Am I missing something here?if I could flush mount my existing factory 10 rd hinged mag pinned to 5 to make it carry better,I would.
 
ok -WHY is it a dumb question?...to each his own but it seems to me putting a 30 rd mag pinned to 5 on an SKS is like putting big racing slicks and spoilers on the back of a toyota echo.....

The LKF is of paramount importance to MKBs. A 5/30 has far greater LKF than a flush 5 rounder.
 
Ah the tapco's...

Can't insert or remove with a closed bolt... don't always hold the bolt open when empty. Mine are prone to last round stove-piping. And the plastic is soft as sh*t and easily deforms.

Do I want to grind the bottom lips off the bolt carrier to be able to insert with a closed bolt.. I dunno.
 
I have a Russian Refurb, I am not certain of the provenance as it was scrubbed during the refurb process as far as I can tell, (I haven't been able to have my sks here and look at yooper's webpage to narrow it down), but I am reasonalby certain is falls around 1954-1955 or so, but I had no problem with the tapco 5/5 round magazines in mine, I am accepting of the fact that the duckbill magazines are not meant to be changed out when they are empty.
 
We own 30 rounders pinned to 5 Because it looks cool, and if we ever get the retarded mag caps shot down, or a zombie appocalypse breaks out were just a rivet away.
 
I think my 30 round SKS mag looks cool. It works as good as the original one and works from stripper clips great. Who cares that it only holds 5? As a previous poster said, if the mag cap law goes away or zombies show up...

I see you have a bayonette lug mounted bipod-how do you like it,and does it affect the accuracy at all because it is mounted on the barrel ,not the stock?
