Hi guys,

I have a 1950 Russian refurb, took it out for the first time yesterday and it shot great. Only problem was the mag kept on opening while firing and dumping out the remaining rounds... I ended up shooting while holding the mag closed, which is a big pain in the butt!

Anyone else ever had this problem? If possible I would like to keep the original fixed mag, not a huge fan of the plastic detachable magazines. Someone suggested that it might have to do with the spring for the mag release being weak, anyone ever have to replace that spring?

Thanks!

They need to be fitted to the gun sometimes, check the top 4 corners, you will see some material shaved, file a bit & try it, it should fit smoothly & lock in place.

Thanks for the info, do you mean the top 4 corners of the mag? The magazine is matching serial # with the rest of the gun, seems to lock pretty good in the stock... Can't wiggle it or anything when the trigger group is in the stock.

Just to clarify, I can't get the magazine to drop without hitting the mag release, it's only when the gun is firing that the magazine drops unexpectedly. Do you know what parts could be affected by recoil to drop the magazine like that?

SKS origianally was built with a 10-round magazine. In order for them to be legal and beyond the powers of our Guardians of the Peace and Good Order to #### with and render illegal under our rather-stupid laws, they were cut down to 5 rounds before the rifles left Russia.

Thus, the Canadian SKSs form a UNIQUE group of Milsurp rifles: milsurps tailored FOR the Canadian market.

If the mags were not cur down perfectly, there can be problems.

Solve these small problems of fitting and you have a solid little rifle with NO problems.

Only thing i could see is a lazy or dirty mag release spring. The spring is stiff enough to keep the mag closed, never had that issue with an SKS yet.

My mag was not cut down
It has a bar welded under the follower that limits how far down the follower can be depressed
I have not seen an SKS with a cut down mag... Seems to me that cutting it might be a difficult and expensive way to limit it

Cut down sks mags?

They are typically pinned or riveted and completely intact. What would this have to do with a mag coming loose?

I know you are a knowledgable guy but the above is a bunvh of nothing helpful at all....

Op is this gun something u bought new or second hand?

Sometimes idiots buy aftermarket mags to mall ninja them up, and fit these mags by removing material on the magazine release instead of removing material from the magazine itself creating issues such as yours.

I have seen a few people recommend such things here and hope this isnt the case for urs.

Thanks for the info guys, appreciate the help!

I bought the gun "new" from a store, is a Russian refurb as stated. It has the original magazine, serial # matches the rest of the metal parts on the gun and the stock. The magazine is pinned from the bottom in the same way I've seen on all Russian refurbs.

I don't think anyone has messed with the magazine release, when not being fired it holds the magazine securely. It seems as though the recoil is loosening something, somehow releasing the mag. I think that a "lazy" mag release spring could possibly be the culprit, isn't dirty or anything...

Might be a long shot, but does anyone know somewhere I could buy another mag release spring?

It is not the spring. My guess is you assemble it incorrectly. Suggestion is take it apart and put it together. The trick is in your trigger you did not push it in all the way. If you need more help let me know. Post pictures here that would help.

Definitely possible I could of assembled it wrong, I am new to the SKS... Someone more knowledgeable about the platform then me saw me shoot and thought that I had assembled it wrong, however the problem continued after he popped out the trigger group and reassembled it. I also disassembled the rifle today and reassembled it, didn't realize that the rifle would still shoot even if not assembled correctly...

Here are some pictures of the trigger group/magazine, please let me know if it looks like I assembled it incorrectly.

If it is assembled incorrectly and I shot it yesterday, could I have damaged any of the parts?

Thanks!
