Is something like this feasible? Is the red dot too far forward? Has anyone done something similar? Would the magnifier necessarily by off center (too tall) by too big of a margin?

Let me guess... u want magnification but also want to retain the use of stripper clips.

My suggestion for this would be:

1) buy and mount a Russian MOLOT rail to the gun, shim said rail to have a great enough left hand offset to allow for stripper clips.

2) Mount a Mosin PU sniper rail to gun, and use a PU scope.

I'm aiming for something more modern, hence this magnifier idea...yes I'm also hoping to retain the stripper clip functionality.

I drilled and tapped a SKS once, not easy with the milled receiver. I did it to mount my POSP scope so there was no way around it. Wanted to create a SVD kind of look with the Dragunov stock. The magwedge looks expensive but it actually is not when you think about it. You can still use the stripper clips which is great in the SKS.

I'd guess the reflex (as in pic) is a faster target acquisition than any scope or tubular red-dot. I only have one on a 22 but it's pretty instinctual, I think. And a bigger and less obstructive 'view' than a tube-dot.
Beyond this idea, there was a fellow last year or so promoting the idea of a barrel-mounted tube-dot on his SKS. It was co-witnessed with the irons, if you could get the right height of mount. And he said the 'low-priced' dots could take the recoil stuck to the barrel . . . I couldn't get mine to co- ... and gave up.
