sks mags needs help

so i just bought some steel 30 rnd sks duck bill mags and i cant get them to take the stripper clips properly. The bolt seems to be pushing the follower forward, and that makes the bullets hit the reciever instead of going into the clip. Also when I finally get the stripper clips to work they only take so many bullets and stop(not because of the pin)Im wondering if the spring can be to strong.
any help on how to get the strippers to work would really help a bunch

Probably not what you want to hear, but if I were you I would sell it and get an SKS-D.
 
'Fraid what everyone else is saying is true. The cheaply made Chi-Com mags have almost never worked for anyone. They are made of flimsy material and not to exact enough specifications. I'd suggest an SKS-D or maybe a CZ-858

It's a known fact that NO DUCKBILL MAG can match the performance of the standard issue SKS fixed mag.
If you want the looks and look-cool factor of the 30/5 mags' I'm afraid you'll have to resort to buying an SKS type "D" to get "all show and go".
Besides, humping around with three or four 30 round mags limited to five rounds is not fun. A 30/5 round mag is essentially a five round mag with a big cumbersome handle.
Unfortunately, a short five round mag is a ##### to insert into the SKS "D" because it lacks that big cumbersome "handle"... go figure...:confused:

I have a bunch of USA brand 30/5 mags that work properly. I've never tried to use the stripper clips in them because once I got the "duck" billed mags I never saw the point of having stripper clips. Have you tried loading the magazine by hand and then firing it? I'm curious what your problem is? I've heard that sometimes the feed lips need to be bent slightly inwards because the SKS has such sloppy tolerances that they vary from rifle to rifle. The reason that I bought USA brand magazines is because they are thicker metal than the other brands that were on the market and seemed to be better quality. You may have to alter the magazines but I think it's highly likely you can get them working. Even if you get an SKS-D you may have to alter the magazines that you get because they are usually AK magazines and might not feed properly. I say this based on personal experience.
 
man i had the same issues...the follower comes up crooked and will not activate the bolt stop, making stripper loading "difficult". Also, follower would not depress completely because it gets pinched by a sheetmetal lip present at around round 4. This same condition would not allow the follower to come up either. I made a curved follower extension that forces the follower to come up evenly, before i did this the follower would not feed the bullets right-instead, they would jam into the reciever and compress the bullets into the casing! Nice and dangerous...Anyway, after much monkeying, it sort of works. It is no longer "pinned"-The capacity is limited by the length of the follower extension(i.e. it is "plugged"). I would take pics of the follower extension, but the mag is permanently shut as per canadian law. As a result, it's difficult to clean the mag properly...See why these are more trouble then they're worth?!!!

Tape 5-ers end to end and you have leverage because they are now 20-sized. Take out, flip and back in.

that really sums it up,just like the m1a 5 rounders are more difficult to use proficiently.get a "D" or stay with a fixed mag.stripper clips are an excellent way to go.i use them in my m305 and my lee enfeilds rather than switching up mags.
 
I've managed to get my hands on a couple 5-round duckbills, just to tinker with them and see what all the fuss is about. All I had to do to get the thing to feed was bend the feed lips to match my bolt. Goes a lil' somethin' like this;
1) remove bolt from rifle
2) depress follower in magazine
3) slide your bolt between the feed lips (sounds dirty, don't it?)
4) eyeball the fitment of the feed lips to the bolt. They should wrap around it at roughly the same angle as the bolt lugs, but not enough to bind.

The follower sometimes activates the hold-open catch, but the little plastic nub is worn down enough that it won't do it 100% of the time. Overall, it's about 1/2 as good as the old fixed mag, but it looks cool :D And it does work.

As far as loading, unless you can get the mag to activate the hold-open catch, you're not gonna be able to use your stripper clips reliably to load the rounds. The catch holds the bolt & bolt carrier in the correct position to feed rounds into the mag, so just holding it back by hand and trying to strip rounds isn't gonna work. Just load the mags by hand, it's what they're for :D When they're empty, you can just hold the mag catch, rack the bolt and the mag should just fall out onto the table. Mine does, anyway :cool: Hope that helps!
