Please feel free to post what you have done with your open or aperture sights in this thread. It will be nice to have all of the ideas in one place.

This is a simple aperture sight that can be built with hand tools. It has both elevation and windage adjustment. The sight is 1-1/2" x 1/2" x 1/8" and there is about 3/8" of travel in the slots. The upper slot is twice as wide as the lower slot. The lower slot is a snug fit on the 6x40 screw. The holes in the dust cover are 6x40 thread and 1/2" apart. The lower hole needs to be on center with the retaining pin hole.

Here is one way of adding a high quality aperture sight that will not effect your regular cleaning and maintenance. (Like a Tech-Sight would) This will probable require some machine work but it could be done with hand tools by a skilled craftsman. The dust cover is drilled and taped in the same way as above. A piece of aluminium shaft with the correct diameter for the radius on your sight is all you need to get started. The rest is self evident from the photos. Just make sure that the mount is low enough. Just about any Redfield or Williams sight could be used. This one I got many years ago on Ebay.

I've ordered one of those 'see all' open sights and a BC tactical mount, still waiting for the sight to arrive so I can try it out.

I think I just watched about a half dozen of your videos. I consider myself a pretty handy fellow and I must say that I like your work. Little jealous of that mill too. Going to have to save my pennies and get a mill or lathe. Used to do a bunch in college and I know that I could have some serious fun with it.

What do you think of the SKS Firesight set from Williams Gun Site?
It looks easy to install and less fabrication/machining. You did a great job but I don't have as much skills and tools you have.

Great idea polar_hunter you just saved me from having to buy tech sights. You may consider yourself ripped off. KISS engineering at its best.

Let us know how it goes. I just came across the see-all sight, and it looks nice. Seems like it might be a really good option.

My sks's will stay stock configuration :)

And this is what makes some of these intriguing. I would love a better sight that doesn't involve any permanent modifications to the firearm, but you can get a replacement dust cover for $25, so getting a replacement and adding a peep sight this way might be the cheapest option available to upgrade sights without permanently changing anything...

I had a tech sight and sold it. I didn't like the fact that it was only good for one range. When I comment on this, people usually say: "its only an SKS". I experimented with bedding my sks into it's wood stock, & in similar threads people say things like: "its only an SKS". I swapped out the wood stock for a Chinese jungle stock & in similar threads people say things like: "its only an SKS". Finally people spend big $ buying aftermarket stuff for their SKS to which I think to myself: "its only an SKS". Imo the best stock for the SKS is the Chinese Jungle stock. With it I shot a 10 shot 3.5" group from the prone psn at 100 yards. I like the aluminum base for the receiver sight, but it's mounted to the dust cover which is not always a very tight fit on the receiver. Like the sight base you made Beermaker. ;)

Also this seems like flying off the handle paranoid, but when you affix aluminum to steel you are setting up a voltage potential. Probably not a big deal but it could be if you are using your rifle in a permanently severe environment, but again that's probably stretching things a bit.

I got it done in my garage with a small piece of 1/8" steel plate, a drill press, zipcut and a welder. Cut the open sight off the rear sight leaf and weld the new piece in place. I went with a fillet weld for strength. Aperture size is 3/16". Some of the front sight hood was in my FOV so I cut it down much like an AK. I chucked the front sight up in the drill press and used a file and emery cloth to turn it down to about .050" or so from IIRC .069" as it came from the factory. Reblue the parts and you're off to the races.
