Not really sure.
One person does forsure and thats me. I use it for whitetail and with success too. My Yugo shoots amazingly accurate for an SKS so that makes me a happy fella.

Who else here uses them for hunting medium sized game?. Don't be shy and don't let the Anti SKS biggots bring you down.

I don't hunt myself but, as I understand it, here in Ont. most shots are fairly close so accuracy should not be a problem and a short, handy rifle for being in the bush would (IMHO) make the SKS and a 30 cal. round ideal. Just like a lever 30/30.

This topic has been done to death, check this section, and the hunting section.
Personally I'd say for Deer within 100 yards, and you have been practicing at the range, then you are good to go.

Yeah sorry Calum, I was just curious as to who uses their SKS for hunting is all.
I know they are good for deer within 100 yards as I'v shot a few already with it :).

Just curious as to how many on here use them.

You aren't the only one. I'm another SKS hunter who has taken many games with my Norc SKS. No complaints. I've taken blacktailed and mule deer as well as black bears, with original iron sights.

Hey no problem, sorry to sound snappish I was typing fast and without my morning coffee. :D

I'd be taking one of my SKS's out with me this season, but I stupidly sold off all my factory soft point ammo, and I haven't been able to find the powder I need for reloading.

I am leaving for deer camp tomorrow afternoon for a week, and will be using my Russian SKS for the first time whenever we do a deer drive in the thick woods. Shots are always within 50yrs and usually less, and my SKS is right on at that distance. The rest of the hunt I use my 308 Ruger.

See ya in a week.

Cheers!!

I dont hunt but I am an Sks shooter , I love my Sks , I would be willing to bet you could take down a dear at more than 100 yards , but I am not a hunter so maybe I dont know what Im talking about. I usually shoot open sites at 200 and Ive been fairing pretty well!
Rock on Sks Brother !!!!!!!!!!!

i like the sks but feel as a hunting arm it leaves much to be desired. the yugo 59/66 doesn't have the power or accuracy to justify it's weight. and i do not care for the safety arrangement, i don't think it is a very safe rifle to be carrying with a round in the chamber.

that being said, i have covered a few miles with an sks in case i came across a coyote.

Why not?

It was built around the idea of carrying a round in the chamber, and under conditions of battle as well.

I maintain good muzzle direction with any rifle anyway.

other than blocking the trigger, does the safety do anything?

yes, if safety not on then you cant unlock (behind the trigger guard).

true, but other than blocking the trigger, does it in any way prevent the rifle from firing? and yes, i know all about keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, but the sks is one rifle i would never carry with a round in the chamber and the safety on, the svt40 is another for the same reason.

i'm not calling anybody's baby ugly. i happen to like the sks.

i just reread my last post and it didnt like the way it came out, what i meant was... you cant unlock the trigger housing from the stock if the safety is off.

and you are correct , the safety only prevents the trigger from moving back , not the best safety in my opinion but hey!! it was design in 1945 after all.
