SKS "National Match" style rules.

Here's something I posted on the SKS boards, thought it might interest some of you.

Considering the number of SKS in Canada at the moment (and more coming!), they seem like a natural for a national match style shoot. Like surplus Springfields and Garands were in the states, the SKS is a rifle available to anyone.

These rules are pretty well lifted form the CMP's M1a/m14 rules and are designed to provide a framework for basically stock SKS with some tweaking to get reasonable accuracy. Also I think 50 and 100yds better suits the rifles capabities and provides more venues.

Before getting up in a huff about how inaccurate the SKS is, it's well to think that M1 Garands and M14s as issued with surplus ammo were only spec'd for 4MOA. People have tinkered with them and found out every little trick to getting more accuracy out of them.

Anyway enough rambling

The Rifle:

Rifles must be an SKS carbine (any nation) and retain original outward appearance and function. All parts must be original configuration and function.

1) Stocks must be original issue or commercial replica of wood or synthetic, spacers / extensions may be used to lengthen length of pull only. No modifications to comb or grip areas.
2) Shims or other materials may be used to improve stock fit.
3) Triggers must be at least 4.5lb pull. Sear and other parts may be polished / reshaped to reduce creep or pull weight. Rifles that fire on bolt closing or fire unintentionally will be immediately disqualified.
4) Sights must be original style, front sight post may be modified / replaced with a finer one. Both sights may be painted or blackened to increase contrast or reduce glare.
5) Gas system must be functional and rifle must feed from magazine. * Additional vent holes may be drilled in gas tube to moderate action cycling *
6) Barrel must be original manufacture and chamber, barrel may be re-crowned or counter-bored.
7) Bayonet and cleaning rod may be removed.
8) Stock may be any colour, metal may be any finish.
9) Ammunition may be any surplus, commercial or hand loaded 7.62x39.

Accessories;

Slings, shooting jackets and shooting glasses may be worn. No rest or supports of any kind are permitted

A suggested course of fire could be;

Sighters - max 10 shots, 100yds - any position

Slow Fire Prone / Bench without rest - 10 shots, 100yds - 10 min

Rapid fire Prone / Bench without rest - 10 shots, 100yds - 60 sec with one reload required

Rapid fire Sitting / Kneeling -10 shots, 50yds - 60 sec with one reload required

Slow fire Standing - 10 shots, 50yds - 10 min

This could be changed to suit facilities / ranges available, but I think should be a mix of positions and slow and rapid fire to emphasize overall marksmanship rather than benchrest style accuracy

You can use an SKS in a service rifle match anyways?.... and people dont do half bad either

Yeah, service rifle is definitely neat-o, but the idea here is everyone competing with the same design rifle. Anyone can get, or already has an SKS. With a bit of tinkering your rifle will be as good as anyone's.

Also the match format requires less range and equipment, and would be better suited to informal or postal matches.
