SKS not a hunting rifle?

One of the mods on another forum deleted some answers to a new shooters questions. The reason for deleting my response is because the SKS is NOT a hunting rifle. Last time I checked you're able to hunt with an SKS in Canada as long as you don't have a calibre restriction in your area. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
 
No rules against hunting with an SKS. Obviously, FMJ use isn't permitted. BTW, I did see that post on the other forum - wasn't fair on that Mod's part to respond the way he did.
 
There are better choices out there, but too many animals have been klled with an SKS to rule it "not a hunting rifle"

Sounds liek someone that doesn't know what they are talking about...

Yes, it is perfectly legal to hunt with an SKS in Canada. It was not designed as a hunting rifle, but neither were many rifles which are well suited and successfully used to hunt by lots of people everywhere.

Keep on dividing the community. Maybe the Libs will let them keep a break action single barrel shotgun if they are good little Fudds. :rolleyes:

Firstly, to address our moderators comment that the SKS is "Not a Hunting Rifle". I'm sorry, but that attitude is exactly why the firearms community is so divided. Intolerance for anything that doesn't sport a bolt or a lever will get all sportsman sold down the river. "Divide and Conquer" is the mantra of the anti's, and like it has been said: They won't ban your bolt action hunting rifle.....they'll make sure they call it "A sniper rifle that's 100 times more powerfull than the gun the police use!!!"

Neither was the Lee Enfield .303....yet there are more enfields in the bush than anything else. Any issue with calling my #4 .303 a "hunting rifle"?

The SKS actually makes an outstanding bush gun, at roughly 1/4 of the price of my Ruger Deerfield (Gasp! ANOTHER military derivitive!) The short sight radius and semi auto action are very well suited for hunting in the Boreal. The 7.62X39 Cartridge has ballistic performance that is virtually identical to the 30/30 winchester, and there are a few ammo makers (Federal, etc) loading PSP HUNTING ammo in this cartridge. Epps has a few boxes left.

I can't help you with the left-hand questions,. but as for the magazine, it will come limited to 5 rounds right from the dealer (as per the law)
As far as it going prohibited: The Liberal Party of Canada has stated in it's official policy and platform that, if elected, they will ban all semi-automatic long arms that share military features (sounds safe right?) Heres the punchline: These features include REMOVEABLE MAGAZINES. I guess my Deerfield, BAR and 7600 are going to the smelter.
The key here is to not let them win. As far as grandfathering, the unoficial word on the street is that they will be required to be turned in for destruction, as grandfathering does not get them "off the street".

My advice is to spend the 200 bucks, practice with it until you are top notch, then buy some suitable hunting ammo and hit the bush.

There is no such thing as a "bad" gun. They can all be excellent tools (or horrible weapons)...it depends on the user. :)

IF I ever go deer hunting, my SKS will be what I bring with me, as it's the one rifle I own that I have the most experience with and have the most convidence that I can make an ethical, clean, quick kill shot with. I have a few thousand rounds fired thru her, know her like the back of my hand (yes, she is within my 5 most precious possessions), every other rifle I own is in the low hundred round counts.

Why do you think its crappy. For in the thick bush it is fine. When I am in the thick stuff, shots are all under 50yrs. My Russian can hit bulls all day long at that distance. So for a bush gun it can be accurate, very quick, and it can easily knock down deer, and even very inexpensive for someone with limited funds, the SKS can be just perfect.
 
the sks isnt my type of gun ...but that said i think it works good and is fine and thereis no reason no to hunt with it (no fmj tho) plus i think its a great gun for people that are getting into shooting to buy and get out shooting for $400 and change your on the range and blastin 1120 rnds ....sorry a bit off there its the wine :D
 
The whole "not a hunting rifle" thing is ANTI GUN PROPAGANA. They're all hunting rifles, I don't care if it's an SKS, an AR 180B, or a fifteen pound long range bench rifle. They can all be hunted with successfully, and probably have been. Lets not buy into other people's narrow definitions.
