SKS: Optics, sights & mounts.... update feb 16, 2010

With the recommendation of a few members Ive decided to post a bit of info on a mod that Aramir recommended. It seems there is a solution to the SKS ejecting spent casings straight up in the air that looks nearly factory original and works like a dream. By clearancing a small portion of the ejection window, it will allow the ejector to kick the shells straight out to the right. I forgot to take pics before but you can compare to your own rifle to see how small an amount of material needs to be removed. On the lower left corner of the ejection window there is an angle that needs to be cut back to a smaller radius. Thats it! You dont need to lengthen the window any, just turn the angle into a small radius and youre done.

You can barely tell its been modified, until you start firing. Now I can mount a fullsize scope without worry, or an ugly shell deflector.

I've seen this on Russian forums...even posted it somewhere here a while ago...I was in doubt if it actually will do the trick. Thanks for proving ;)

Supernova,

What tool(s) did you use and what prep did you go through for the procedure?

Thanks.

SH.

spearhunter, this one was pretty basic. I stripped the rifle down to a barreled reciever and just free-handed it with a die grinder using the pictures that Aramir provided. If you wanted to really be precise you could continue the lines of the ejection window with tape or soapstone, then draw in a small radius in the corner to use as a guide. The die grinder left a fairly rough surface so I used a small file and rasp to smooth the surface a little, then a little sand paper. If you dont have a die grinder, or the wife veto's such tools in the house you could use a rasp just as well. I used compressed air to blow all the filings out, there will be a big mess inside the reciever when youre done grinding. Pretty basic stuff. I wonder why Simonov left this little corner in the window? Everyone who copied his design did the same, but with such a low cut ejection window and ejector mounted on the side of the bolt it just doesnt make sense. It looks like he designed the rifle for side ejection but that little corner prevents it. Wierd

Thanks. Sounds like a simple project with such a profound effect. I have an el cheapo dremel-like tool from Crappy tire so that should work. I'll have to look into which stone to use. I'll probably tape off the chamber and other areas if only to minimize the crap. I thought the receiver metal would be made of harder stuff.

Was your receiver blued to begin with? I am not sure but I think mine is painted??? It's a Tula refurb.

Cheers.

Mine is blued and yours should be too. Russian bluing is alot better than the chinese. I used a small carbide burr and it went pretty fast. Cleaning up with a stone would be a good choice to make it smooth. If you dont have access to compressed air, be sure to clean all the oil and grease out of the rifle otherwise the filings will stick to everything. Be sure to get all the filings out when youre done. Good luck!

No-compromise fullsize scope on SKS

Well my latest bubba is done. I made this mount from a wideview see-under mount for a mossberg 500. The mount has 2 raised bars that make contact with the reciever, I cut the lower half off below the upper bar. It sits high enough not to interfere with the iron sights or dissassembly/cleaning. It doesnt cover the serial number, and allows enough eye relief for a fullsize Leupold 3-9x40. The ejection window mod eliminates the need for a shell deflector. Overall I'm happy with it.

I need to do that ejection window mod real lots. My poor scope got nice an dinged up, even with a casing deflector.

On to the goods. Tula SKS, ATI stock, Tapco mags, Picatinny (sp?) receiver mount, BSA Huntsman 6 18x40. Its a big b!tch. But at least now I can REALLY see what I'm shooting at.

Excuse the quality. iPhones only do so well in low light.

NCStar Gas tube mount?

Perhaps my am the dumb but I think this sticky is missing the NC Star Gas tube mount.

I did some searching and found this said about it:
I bought the handguard mount.... It was a file to fit item (this is a good thing) and I had it fitting as tight as could be.

As soon as I started shooting the metal heats up and the thing is floppy as a .... well a floppy thing indeed!

This mount is junk in my opinion, it's not even stable enough for a red dot. I do, however use it as a replacement gas tube with the rail part removed. I like the sleeker look. I put a piece of the rail on the bottom of my stock to mount a bi-pod.

Too bad, I was thinking my 2.5x would be nice up there. :(

As a optic mount it is no good, but as a gas tube it is great. Just remove the rail which is mounted with four fastners and your set to go.

has anyone specifically bought this combo off marstar? Pro's / Con's?

SKS-Sight-Combo-L.jpg

SKS SIGHT COMBO
Comes with:
- NcS-MTSKS: SKS Scope Tri-Mount
- NcS-SEECR430R: 4x30 Sporting Scope
SKS-SIGHT-COMBO Status: in stock $89.95

My goal being not to expect to blow apart a fly buzzing around the 200m backstop, but rather be able to simply SEE.... the 200m backstop.

(I'm exaggerating, but you get the idea, I'm not looking for pin point accuracy, I'm just looking to tinker & plink, and at $90.00, it may not be a bad idea).

The scope is good for a couple of hundread rounds. Also there is a way of making only this style of rear cover mount work. It intail's that you use a buisness card and place it under the side set screws and apply red lock tight all over it and the retainer nut. Then simply remove the cover and allow to dry for atleast 24 hours at room tempture. Also some fitting to the front fork's my be required.

Hey guys, I've been thinking about adding a scope to an SKS lately but I don't want it too look like Tapco fest or have a huge POSP Dragunuv/AK scope on it. What I had in mind was mounting a repro PU scope low and offset to the left side, allowing the use of irons, allowing the use of the stripper clip guide and clearing the dust cover. I would mount similarly to a M1D Garand or No4 Mk1 (T)'s scope.

Do you guys know if some a mount exists?

due to the lack of objective and ocular bells, the PU can be mounted low enough to use the irons and still have a good cheek weld. I found a russian sks with a pu scope and mount searching with google that looked very good. its short length and eye relief is perfect for throwing over the rear cover with room to get a stripper clip in there. a shortened choate mount using very low rings seems like a good idea. from what I understand, the pu mount takes a great deal of skill to install properly so unless you are very good at it or know a gunsmith who knows how to do it properly, I would say go with something like the choate.

I've read this and other threads in detail, and I notice a lot of fabrication in order to mount scopes.

Is there any reason you can just use something like the SKS Tactical Scope Mount and then attach a variety of scopes to it? Probably something compact?

I just want a simple mount and scope, not looking for super precision or anything. Just something fun to use at the range etc.

Thanks.
