I just got a russian model SKS and put a magwedge scope rail on it.
I tried a 1mp Bushnell Acog clone. It just well at first then something went wrong and I didnt like how high it sat with such a low cheeek weld for my face to rest on so i returned it for a Bushnell sStrikeforce.
My question is where do these types of red dot optics work better from, close to your eye on the scope rail or farther way on the far end of the scope rail?

Red dots work a little better closer up for off hand shooting. Doesn't matter as much on a bench in my opinion. What ever you do stay away from the Bushnell First Strike. I went through 2 of them both could not handle x39 recoil and the reticles were walking all over the place. I really like the idea of the full length SKS rails but I found them to cause reliability issues with ejection.

Oh no my first post was a misprint, First Strike is the exact red dot i have .
It shot about as good as they advertise 5 moa.
Im not too happy with that, its fine out to 100 yards and should hit deer and coyotes sized target but gophers will be tough at anything over 50 yards since the dot itself will block out the gopher.
I do like that its way more low profile than the acog clone and good bushgun for deer

I wonder if i should put a 4-9x power scope on there instead.
I want something decent but under 250 bucks
is there a optic that has qwik sight access like a red dot for under 100 yard shots and also good to 200 yards if need be?
or will i need say an normal scope like 1-9 power plus a red dot side/offset mounted as well?

There are pros and cons to both for your set up and shooting style. It's always best to mount sighting systems as close to your natural focus as you can. This will be different based on optic type and field of view.

This is even more apparent if you wear glasses, and will also most like eliminate or reduce the ocular focus between different glasses .. or prescription glasses and shooting glasses.

You will also have much less eye fatigue this way, if you spend a lot of time in the eye box, for magnification and red dot.
