ok so I am wondering on the merits of each and what sets the 858 apart making it more expensive.... and then vz and cz . I am new to the desire for iron curtain guns

One is light, accurate, highly customizable, bad ass, and hella fun. The other is a big heavy boom stick that isn't very accurate.

I wouldn't call an SKS heavy. Too short, yes, but definitely not heavy.

Just took my CZ 858 out today. Shot a little of this and a little of that, had great fun. Go to the store and see which is more comfortable for you. That's what I did and I went for CZ instead of SKS.

I love my sks. with the legal mag restrictions the big mags on the cz vz are just more weight. I shot mine so much at blast off this year cosmo came out from under the front sight. Just cut that butter knife off the front and shoot the snot out of it

They are both good examples of Eastern Bloc power, and neither will fail you. At the price point of only $200 the SKS is a good deal, a nice piece of history (when left as is), and fully functional. They shoulder differently. I prefer the 858 as a shooter due to ergonomics, but the SKS is great also - but traditional stock design. I would get the 858 first, and then an SKS when you have some smaller spare cash. Or maybe someone at the range can let you fire both and that may help you decide. Both are reliable, but different on how they fit the shooter. Some prefer the SKS fit, some prefer the 858 fit.

I'm in the "both" camp as well. I handled a CZ for the first time last weekend and I have to say I was very impressed. Light weight and shoulders like a dream. I now need one.

The SKS to me is a nice piece of history, inexpensive and a blast to shoot.

I bought both of them, My 858 is lighter and more accurate than the SKS, both are good guns, get both if you can !

I've got both; I've had an SKS for years, and just picked up a CZ-858 (with the folding stock) following the election call.

If I had to own one, I'd go with the CZ. It's light, simple, handy, breaks down more easily, is easier to clean, and most importantly, the more sight of it makes Wendy cry and antis wet themselves as 99% of Canadians are unable to tell it apart from an AK-47.

That being said an SKS will serve you well too. It's not too heavy, simpler than the 858, durable as all heck, is a fascinating piece of history, and you can buy three and some ammo for the price of the 858.

and less recoil on the cz not that it matters hardly any recoil with the 7.62 anyways but i have both my first gun was an sks

The CZ is a blast to shoot and overall probably a bit better, so if you can afford it, get that one first.

I have both and would not go without either. Considering you can get a Russian SKS from ammosource for under 200 bucks that would be my first choice.
