I like both guns and will probably end up purchasing both but I wanted to know what people think about them. I have read many posts about some issues with the CZ 858 but are there just as many issues with the SKS? How do they compare? Which one is more reliable as far as breakdowns and malfunctions? Which one is more accurate? Which one requires more maintenance?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

Somes CZ858 had issues but the vast majority work flawlessly. I have a CZ and never had any problems with after 1000 rds fired. The CZ and SKS are very different rifle. Generally, the CZ is more accurate, the gas system is a bit simpler to clean. the SKS is very robust, raisonably accurate and somes are very accurate, they are easy to clean too. I prefer russian SKS over chinese but i have a chinese 1 and cannot complain against but i still prefer my russians. If you want to customize, many stocks and scope mount are available for the CZ,manys of thoses accessories are canadian made too. CZ cost like $700,SKS about $180 for a russian refurb. Somes found that $700 is too much for a CZ but for me, was 1 of my best acquisition, my SKS's stay in the safe now. In my opinion, both are a "must have" rifle.:)

Both of them are amazing guns, honestly the best option is go with both. You can get an SKS for what $200? I currently own an SKS and am really looking into buying an 858 to add to my collection, by far from what I hear the CZ is more accurate. Reliability wise I cannot speak on the 858, but my SKS can go through hell and back and still put rounds down range. As for maintenance, I assume you'll be shooting corrosive ammo, so both need to be cleaned after each outing, barrels and gas systems.

In all, best choice: buy both.

If you dont shoot corrosive ammo can you go a few outings without the cleaning?

You CAN, although a good shooter always cleans his guns ;)
You don't necessarily HAVE to clean it immediately after you shoot if you are not shooting corrosive ammo.
If on the rare occasion I have been shooting and it wasn't corrosive and I don't have time to do a thorough cleaning I will at least make sure my rifle is well oiled so when I get back to it a while later I'm not scraping hardened carbon off the parts.

If your humidity is low enough and the outings are close enough together, you do not need to clean after corrosive.

I never clean after using non-corrosive, because I know the next outing I will be using corrosive anyway and it will need a full cleaning...

I got a 858, I love it, its amazing but I'm looking at buying an sks maiby, there both great!, the thing I really like more about the 858 is the fast mag change!

I just bought a CZ and love it. I have an SKS that'll be going up in the EE pretty soon, if anybody's interested. Not that the SKS is a bad rifle (it's not; quite the contrary; inexpensive, incredibly rugged, acceptably accurate), but that the CZ is a much more modern, refined design, and mine is much better finished and more accurate than my SKS, has a better trigger pull, iis faster and easier to clean (which is important if you shoot corrosive surplus) and is much better at inducing pants-wetting in antis.

I was in your shoes once, Now i have both, if you can, get both the 858 and a Russian SKS, both guns are fun to shoot. As for issues, i have no issues with any of them. The 858 is a bit more accurate and it is lighter than the SKS.
