I am new to the world of guns and hear the only 2 good things I can get for hunting under $400 is a SKS or a Mosin Nagant. I plan on keeping it for hunting medium game until I get something fancy. I like the SKS becuase it is Semi and a bit customizable but the Mosin just has that reliability I hear so much about. So for like deer...

So Which Do You recommended the SKS or the Mosin Nagant?

Every GunNut and their granny owns an SKS ;)

SKS ammo is also a little easier to come by than Nagant ammo, especially soft point hunting ammo...from my experiences anyway.

I recommend the SKS as a stake for the smaller plants (i.e Pea plants, beans, and other creeping legumes), however there's no substitute for tomato's like a Mosin Nagant.

never been impressed with mosins - horrible gun. Those are clunkiest pieces of iron you will ever come across. No chance to scope unless you invest into A-bolt or conversion kit that involves some metal cutting and threading and it still doesn't work right. Round is very powerful though but it comes with a lot of kick - my first scope bite I got from mosin.

Accuracy is comparable to SKS although SKS is semi-auto and supposed to be less accurate but it isn't. I say SKS

You can buy a brand new Stevens from SIR Mailorder in several calibers for under $400 taxes in. You'd then need to add a scope.

You'd be nuts to buy a Milsurp and try to mod it to be a decent hunting rifle when you can get a brand new purpose-built rifle for that price.

If I was woods hunting and shots were at shorter ranges I'd take the SKS. Having said that though I think the NEF Handi rifles are a pretty good deal and in a .308 make a great deer rifle.

If you're limiting it to "Red Rifles"- I've talked to many people who have taken down deer easily with an SKS. If you're not limiting it to RR''s , an M 14 (7.62 X 51 mm NATO, $399.00 @ Marstar, $20-40 more at other places) will take down whatever you need and is a decent shooter right out of the box. Check it out now - word is the supply is going to dry up soon, whether it's true or not - who knows.

Out of the two you listed I'd go for the SKS for sure.

Having said that your $400 budget would easily cover a new Stevens 200 available in a variety of modern calibers (probably with scope for your $400), so if you were purely looking for a "hunting" rifle, you they should be a serious consideration.

Or for $50 more you could get an M14, which would really be head and shoulders above both the Mosin and the SKS in terms of taking game.
