I personally like how quick and easy it is to clean with a Mosin. Ammo is about the same price, the Mosin is a much longer rifle larger rifle.

If able to have one for free what one would you pick and why ? Or would you meet in the middle and get an SVT ?

I have 2 Mosin's (1 I converted to the sniper version), one SKS and a SVT-40...... I like them all, although (because of the bolt action) the Mosin's do kick a little more than the other two....... if you can: get them all!!!

SKS.
Less recoil...ammo IS cheaper.

But then, Mosins have a nice hard kick, hit a little harder, lol...

So, yeah, both.

For an every day shooter, upgrading the stock, etc, SKS...for a piece of history from TWO World Wars, the Mosin.

Buy both!!

The mosin is easier to clean, and ammo is only a little more. If you get a good one they are good to reach out a ways... As mentioned, they can have a TON of history too..

SKS are tons of fun with the semi, and not too bad to clean. Nothing like cleaning the €£#%¥@ SVT-40!!!

I have both (and an SVT) and the one that gets shot the most, by far, is my SKS. The ammo is cheaper, the recoil is nonexistent compared to the Mosin Nagant and SVT, and it's ridiculously easy to strip and clean.

If I could have only one, I'd go with the SKS.

Since they're all so cheap however ($500-600 should get you all three) buy them all!!!D

SKS is easy to clean a mosin nagant is a little easier a few less steps but not much.

I have both so I like both the mosin nagant is fun so is the SKS but it depends on what you want I like the mosin nagant more just because it's a bigger hitting round and it's noticeable. Rocks break and fly around lots of fun.

Both Simonov and Tokarev were neck in neck in their design of semi auto rifle for soviet army. Because Stalin liked Tokarev more on personal level he chose to go with Tokarev rifle SVT38/40 and not Simonov design rifle. Then during the war when all hell broke loose and no time for change and SVT40 proved itself to be troublesome, it was desided to ramp up production of Mosin Nagant rifles instead.
So there is your answer written in history as it is. MOSIN NAGANT 91/30

Oh no, I haven't even looked at cleaning the SVT yet.. Non-corrosive ammo made me lazy ;). I like how easy the SKS is to strip. My friend let me put 40 rounds through his Mosin before I thought they were cool. I really like Mosins now. All three, including the SVT, at they prices they are at now, are really neat to have.

They are very addictive. As many members have stated, one of these rifles is often not enough. I have to admit, that I am guilty of owning an over flowing crate of each (SVT, Mosin and SKS).

My first was a Chinese SKS-D, purchased on my behalf by my father when I was only 16 or 17. Heck, the only cost about $40 more with the Lever Arms Christmas sale and that was over a decade ago. Heck even 7.62x39 is about the same price, maybe $20 more.

Then I got into milsups with the purchase of an RC K98 about 8 years ago - ever since I have been in deep.

Pure dollars and sense - probably the SKS. You can now hunt big game with that calibre in many provinces; its semi auto; ammo is cheap; and those that fear guns like to think of it as an 'assault rifle'.
I think it would also be easier to find ammunition, especially soft tipped ammo when compared to the 7.62x54r.

From the historical stand point, probably a Mosin or SVT. Both have significant history and were used in WWII (the Mosin also used in WWI and in multiple post WWII conflicts). Heck if its good enough to kill a Nazi, its good enough to shoot tin cans.

If a guy could manage, I would recommend all three, especially the SVT and SKS with the Lever Arms Christmas Sale. No...I don't work for Lever Arms, but that sale is unbelievable and you will be hard pressed to pick up one of those rifles for any cheaper...period!!! Heck, you can pick up both, for less than what SVT's were selling for only two years ago and you could pick up a Mosin for less than an SVT sold for six years ago.

SKS's extremely reliable. As long as you clean it, it will not fail.

Mosins are crude and simple.

SVT's are finicky (due to the gas system/ammo) but a pretty interesting rifle/design.

My two cents.

My SKS's will be a distant memory before I'd part with any but my most mundane mosin.

I'd rather keep the m305 too. SKS is my winter blaster - that's about it.

apparently the german troops had no problems with using the svt40 and liked them alot ! ... so something doesn't add up

sks vs mosin .... no competition here, SKS alllllllll the way !

It depends what you want to do with it. If you want a plinker/range gun, maybe shtf, cool looking gun, get the sks. You can hunt a bit with it, but it is limited.

If you want a cool older milsurp that you can hunt with if need be or just get in some range time and don't mind the recoil, the mosin is more for you.

The bolt action mosin is way easier to clean, but the sks is by no means hard to clean out.

Out of three Mosins, three SVT's and two SKS's I enjoy the Mosin Nagant the most. They're a lot of fun for open sight shooting at 200 yards, and more accurate than some give them credit for. The SKS is fun to shoot at closer ranges and ammo is cheap, the SVT is decent too except for the field stripping.
